Over the weekend there has been a political incident in Finland. We have this right-wing party Perussuomalaiset (translated True Finns, though literally it would be Basic Finns...). They have a sly jerk as president - the party is his idea and my personal opinion is that this student of political sciences (without any conscience or ideals) realized there is not right-wing radical populist party in operation, and lots of disillusioned and disappointed unemployed people who are just looking for an opportunity to vent their hate. Of course his party has recruited also people who have fascist and racists ideas and sympathies - they've gained notoriety for a variety of incredible racist slurs and gaffes. And they have an MP who is also member of a neo-nazist group and proud of it, blogging and posting in social media his sc views and cute pics of him and his buddies doing the nazi salute etc.
Well, this person deemed it clever to post in his FB account the following post:
"I'm dreaming of a strong, brave nation that will defeat this nightmare called multiculturalism. This ugly bubble that our enemies live in, will soon enough burst into a million little pieces. Our lives are entwined in a very harsh times. These are the days, that will forever leave a mark on our nations future. I have strong belief in my fellow fighters. We will fight until the end for our homeland and one true Finnish nation. The victory will be ours."
Yes, in English. And on the day it's been four years since Anders Breivik massacred 77 people. In a declaration very like Breivik's - which didn't escape attention. the whole affair is preposterous and I'm not going to go into the howling obscenities of the text and its absurdity.
I am happy to say several people reacted and quickly. This MP and his party are in the right-wing government - nothing official has been said by them - they've tweeted their disagreement but I don't count that as a reaction. I was appalled to see how many people rushed to pat the guy on his head and talk about overreacting and nothing wrong with this any patriotic person can see and it's not threatening and oh my god of course the nazi card... especially women, it is weird to see women use foul language and speak for somebody like this. But I was glad to see that lots of political persons who are placed in high positions openly voiced their abhorrence.
Only - ok I'm click-happy and adhd - but it's been two days. And if you didn't react immediately - why publish a short statement which has no original point of view, just repeats the self-evident facts and announces your disdain? I get a strong feeling that politicians are now trying to cash on this - which makes it doubly distasteful. Somebody calling for blood and battle against "multiculturalism" = people he understands not to be Finnish is not an occasion for you to collect applause! it is something that needs to be taken seriously.
And I really really hope no black person or muslim will have to fear for his/her life because of this, in my country.
