(KDKA) PITTSBURGH As the nation grieves the lives lost in the largest shooting on a college campus in U.S. History, those who survived begin the road to recovery.

Kevin Sterne, from Washington County, was shot in the leg. Doctors say he would have bled to death if not for his quick thinking and Eagle Scout background.

Sterne used an electrical cord as a tourniquet around his leg to stop the bleeding.

“I’m not surprised that he knew exactly what to do in that situation, again, it’s kind of second nature, ingrained in our brain,” said Michael Masilunas, an Eagle Scout.

Kevin’s parents, now in Virginia with their son, say they think it will take time for him to come to grips with what happened.

Hilary Strollo, a 2006 Pine-Richland High School graduate, was also among the wounded.

She was shot three times but is expected to recover.

Strollo, a freshman, told family and friends the gunman burst into her French class and started to shoot at everyone, aiming for their heads.

Meantime, a Penn State alum was shot and killed in Monday’s rampage. Jeremy Herbstritt, 27, was doing graduate work in civil engineering and wanted to go into environmental work.
