Summary: This scene is so familiar to her.
“Oh. It’s you.”
Sasuke’s words were not what Sakura was expecting, and they hurt to hear. She knew that Sasuke was still brusque, and always would be, but she had hoped that it would be a bit different for her at least.
“You’re leaving again,” she said instead of responding to his statement.
“Yes,” he said not even looking up from packing his bag.
“Why?”
That made him stop, his hand freezing in midair, halfway to picking up another scroll to cram into the bag that contained his life. “You should know why,” he said as he resumed his packing. “This isn’t the place for me.”
“What about your brother?” she asked. Sakura wanted to say ‘what about me?’ but she didn’t think that that would have the same impact. She always hoped that she was worth something more than she thought she was with him, but Sakura always knew that it was better to expect disappointment with him. Perhaps, she meant something slightly more than the average person, but in the grand scheme of things, she was worth hardly more than a bug to him. Itachi though, he was worth something more.
“I tried to carry out his dream, but I’m not wanted here, and I don’t want to be here. I can’t do what Itachi wanted to be done, so what’s even the point? Perhaps Naruto will be able to do it.” He stuffed the last few things into the bag, and as he stood up, he swung it over his shoulder.
“I guess this is goodbye then,” she said swallowing back the choking feeling of forming tears.
“Come with me.”
The first time she had tried to stop Sasuke from leaving, she would have said ‘yes’ without even thinking if he had offered her that. But, four years stood between that moment and now, and the Sakura of then was very different from the Sakura of now. “I can’t,” she said.
He nodded slowly. “I guess this is goodbye then. Try and keep Naruto from running after me.”
“I will,” she promised hot tears spilling from her eyes. “Will you come back?”
“Maybe,” he said. His hand moved like he was going to touch her, but in the end it stayed by his side. “Goodbye, Sakura.”
“Goodbye, Sasuke-kun,” she said closing her eyes, and when she opened them again, he was gone.
