Summary: She knew they couldn't go back to the days when they were twelve, and she knew that Sasuke was in many ways beyond help, but still, Sakura hoped.

Naruto thought that just because Sasuke had returned to the village it meant that everything could back to normal. Except, there had never been a normal with them. Sasuke hadn’t been normal since the night his brother had murdered his entire family and tormented him with his Sharingan. From the moment the three of them had come together, Sasuke had been broken; they just hadn’t known it.

Years ago, Kakashi had told Sakura that things could go back to the way they had been. It didn’t matter that Naruto and Sasuke had tried to kill each other on the roof of the hospital. Things could go back to the way they had been.

And Sakura had believed him because she had still been twelve and naïve then.

Now, she was seventeen and had survived a war and while most of the time she used her hands to heal, they were still covered in blood.

And Sakura knew now that Kakashi had been lying about their ability to return things to the way they had been. It was impossible then, and it was even more impossible now. But Naruto still tried. He tried to piece Sasuke back together and remind him of the old days, the days before Sasuke had left them all behind in pursuit of power and vengeance. But Sasuke couldn’t go back to those days, and neither could they. There was too much blood between them to ever make that possible.

But Naruto still tried, and Sakura still loved him, and while she knew that going back was impossible, she tried to make him happy. But Sasuke seemed beyond happiness now. And yet, she still gave him all of her love, and he still rejected her, too concerned with fulfilling his brother’s dreams and too concerned with how far he had to go to let himself be happy and whole. But she still tried even though her hopes would only ever be crushed.

Maybe, she was still that naïve girl.
