Summary: All he can do is pray to God for help against these Northmen.
The Northman tells him that no harm will come to his if they let his men be. The priest doesn’t believe him, not when he has already killed, but he repeats the words anyways just in case the invader really is a kind man. And then he prays for salvation from these monsters because he can hear them tearing apart his town and he can smell the blood and death in his church.
But God is silent. Even when one of the Northmen, the one with the mad eyes, drinks from His cup and tears down His cross, God gives him no answers and punishes no sinners. Only the horrified gasps of his congregation and his own protests are uttered against him, no divine punishment is rained down, and the man just laughs at all of them in the church and at the Lord above and swings his axe.
