Summary: The universe had a tendency to butt itself into the middle of their relationship. Melissa only wished that she had actually listened to it.
On the anniversary of their first month together, Dan bought Melissa star. She had been thrilled by it, even if stargazing had never really been her thing, and she would never have been able to find it again, but the act was so romantic that she couldn’t help but be endeared by it. That night, she had hung up the glossy picture of the star in her dorm room, only to have it fall right back down.
A month later, her star went supernova.
On the upside, she had been able to find her star again, and the resulting light show was quite impressive, on the downside, twelve tiny planets had been consumed by it, and she no longer had a star.
Perhaps, she should have ignored Dan’s apologies for choosing such an inferior star and dumped him on the spot, as the universe was clearly telling her to. Really, she couldn’t think of a better way for the universe to tell her that he was not the one.
Instead, she told him that it was okay, and he bought her a necklace and matching earrings laced with silver star-shaped beads, translucent gold and silver crystals, and lovely twisted bits of wire. It was amazing. Unfortunately, the first time she wore them, the necklace broke as Melissa was walking across the quad and a particularly strong gust of wind ensured that she would never find all of the beads. She tried to comfort herself with the knowledge that she still had her earrings, only to discover that one was missing shortly thereafter.
And while she choose not to mention the jewelry incident to Dan, that was far from the only time that his plans or gifts went awry. Like when the restaurant caught on fire during their six month anniversary dinner, or when Dan was attacked by seagulls that one time at the ocean.
Everything that Dan touched tended to implode magnificently around him, but still, Melissa remained with him. ‘It was just bad luck,’ she told herself, but eventually she had to admit that no, the universe did not want them together.
But not even that realization could persuade her to leave him. Clearly, she should be able to stand up to the force that was the universe and tell it to get out of her relationships.
But the universe was usually right in these matters, and eventually, Melissa had to concede defeat. She had stayed on longer than she should have, but there came a point when her level of unhappiness was greater than her desire to beat the universe. There hadn’t really been a eureka moment, just a general awareness that she was unhappy that eventually became overwhelming.
It was nothing against Dan, but really, the guy was boring. She had originally liked him because he was nice, but as it turned it out, nice had a way of making him unbearably dull, and really, she just couldn’t take it anymore.
She did feel a bit of guilt as she broke up with him, if only because he was tearing up and looked like his world had been crushed, but there was no regret, only an awkward ‘goodnight’ and pat on the shoulder as she left him.
And as she walked away, she stumbled upon her long lost earring.
