When the Tirgani came, they had killed the magic. Once, it had burned through all of the Fuhan, a gift from their gods. But under the Tirgani dictatorship, the gods had been forgotten, and the magic had been forgotten.

Some places lay beyond the control of the Tirgani though, in a little corner of what was once Fuha people remembered the old ways even if they could barely practice them.

It filled Runia’s heart with joy to see someone remember what had once been her path in life. Although she now took on the guise of a little old widow, she had once been a master of magic, had once surrendered herself to the gods, and they had rewarded her richly, or so it had seemed at the time.

To live for centuries under the pleasant command of her gods was bliss. To do so under dictators was torture, every second spent looking over your shoulder, always covering your tracks.

But seeing that the fire that had once filled her and all of her sisters still burned somewhere filled her with hope. For maybe someday she might see her gods restored.

Pulling her mistress’s hair back, Lily wondered what had happened to her. When they had first met, Lily had been surprised by her odd attitude, her defiance towards everything. She had known what she had wanted in life and was not afraid to let the world. She had opinions, desires, hopes, dreams- everything she was not supposed to have. Or at least she was not supposed to let the world know about them.

At first, she had been put off by her odd mistress, but she had grown to embrace her oddities, and reveled in them.

Ever since she had married though, that spark had been diminishing. Their mornings were once filled with eager chatter and gossip, but now she sat silently, almost meekly, and there were bruises, hidden easily enough but still present.

Neither spoke about them.

The fire that had once filled her mistress to bursting point seemed all but dead. But there were times when something forced it awake again, and she burned like she had always had before. Lily prayed when she saw those moments that she would always some bit left in her, but it seemed to die just a little more each day.

Her mistress seemed to die just a little more each day.

And soon she knew that nothing would be able revive it, but for now, she liked to pretend that all that was needed was a bit of kindling.
