Here is another space drama.
Annihilation: Conquest was a miniseries which I figured I would read later…turns out years later. Written by
Dan Abnett and
Andy Lanning with art by
Tom Raney,
Scott Hanna, and
Mike Perkins on the Prologue, Conquest was a little different from its predecessor because some of the lesser known characters in the cosmic Marvel Universe took center stage. I did not read all of the tie-ins for the first
Annihilation, so I choose not to read the Conquest tie-ins. I think reading the Prologue one-shot as a debriefing was good enough before diving into the six issue miniseries.
Conquest was fun since those affected were confined inside a sphere and those caught on the outside could not help those stuck on the inside, basically you are on your own. The Star-Lord team was different because they were a collection of rejects that were doing their hardest to make a dent in the Phalanx plan. The Phalanx leader, an Avengers foe, and the return of a fallen hero added to the wow factor. Tom Raney's art reminds me of
Michael Ryan, maybe it is due to Scott Hanna who has worked with both illustrators. There is nothing wrong with Raney but I prefer Michael Ryan's art.
I did not buy the first Annihilation trades because I did not feel the hardcovers warrant the price they cost, especially for three hardcovers. The same could be said for Annihilation: Conquest, one hardcover less yet still very pricey. If someone had bought this series and did not read them when they first came out, I would recommend retrieving the comics and giving them another go around. If all the issues were collected in a set for $10-15, I would recommend purchasing them at that price.
