Time to act on "No on Prop 8" - save marriage rights for everyone
Hey Californians -
I'm not very eloquent, and I'm trying to write this while a 2 year old uses me as a slide. Still:
I know we're very focused on the presidential campaign, and I don't disagree about how important it is. Still, the Chronicle notes today that we're in danger of losing equal marriage rights with Prop 8. Equality California's internal polls show that "the "yes" side now has a narrow 47 percent to 42 percent lead in the campaign . . . a Field Poll taken last month . . . showed the measure losing, 38 percent to 55 percent among likely voters." No on 8 efforts been outspent; we're apparently losing ground in response to a massive grassroots campaign and lots of ad time. (And out of state money, but we are also getting out of state money...)
This can't happen. We can't lose ground on this. My friends and yours and all of our children deserve to have the right to marry and to have the legal, financial rights and health care rights that marriage confers on straight couples. There's no reason they should be second class citizens. And they should have these rights and protections recognized by the FEDERAL government (which means that California's domestic partnership laws aren't good enough).
So please, please, don't be complacent. Register and vote against 8. If you can, give money to Equality California so they can buy ad time. Talk to your friends if you think they feel threatened by equal marriage rights.
