Disclaimer: I don’t own Starsky and Hutch, am only taking them out to play with and am not seriously harming them, etc. etc.
Not betaed.
A/N: I don’t know how much angst there is in this snippet exactly, but I tried, and I did hurt wubbie. I’m afraid I ended up with some Starsky angst too.
It was only a paper cut!
“Damn!”
“What?” said Starsky.
“Just a paper cut, buddy, I’ll get over it.”
Yeah, right, Starsky thought. In an hour, let’s see who’s the big boy.
He looked over at Hutch, who was peering intently at a fingertip, then putting a little pressure on the wound and wiping away the drop of blood.
“Hey, Hutch, stop playing with it, it could get infected.”
“Yeah? I’ll let you know I was just cleaning it out,” Hutch said, and licked his fingertip.
Starsky rolled his eyes.
A little later he watched as Hutch slipped surreptitiously into the bathroom. After five minutes, Hutch slipped just as surreptitiously back into his chair and picked up the tax forms they were working on. Starsky watched but stayed silent.
When they had finished and were putting everything away and into the right envelopes, Starsky saw Hutch peering at his fingertip again, looking worried and prodding it a little. Oh, boy, here we go!
“Starsk?”
“Yeah?”
“I think it may’ve become infected. It looks red. And it kinda hurts now. What if it’s something bad? I mean, other people could have touched those papers, and, well, you know…” Hutch trailed of, looking worried.
A big boy all right, Starsky thought.
“Hell, Hutch, it’s only a paper cut, it’s supposed to get a little red. That’s your body’s way of dealing with it.”
“You sure? What if it’s something bad? You shouldn’t ignore the early signs. Remember that time when I, I… did.” Hutch’s voice faltered and he looked seriously worried now.
Starsky swallowed, remembering only too well. “Yeah, I do,” he said gruffly. Their game had ended up being almost fatal. “But I’m sure this just an ordinary paper cut. Nothing to worry about. Whaddaya say if I fix us up some dinner now, and we go to bed really early? Hmm? You can go put on some iodine or something, and tomorrow it’ll be all right, I promise.”
“Yeah.” Hutch looked more cheery now.
Just needed to take his mind off it, Starsky thought.
*****
Did I ever take his mind off it. Some promise!
Remorse coursed through Starsky as he picked up Hutch’s hand, stroking it gently. Hutch was almost as pale as the hospital bed linen, but, luckily, he was on the mend now. Yesterday, Starsky had rushed a feverish Hutch to the hospital and last night had been difficult; the infection had spread much more quickly than anyone expected.
“Hutch,” Starsky whispered, not expecting to be heard. “I’m so sorry.”
Just then, Hutch’s eyelids fluttered, and a moment later they were looking into each other’s eyes.
“Hutch. Sorry.” Starsky whispered again.
“I’m going to be all right, you know.”
“Yeah, but…”
Hutch sighed. “I know. It’s okay, it’s all right.”
“Yeah, but Hutch, I never listened to you!”
Hutch looked at Starsky affectionately, seeing the love and care in his eyes.
“Starsk,” he said, “it was only a paper cut!”
