10 am and it feels so dark

Up to leave friend Richard off at the airport early this morning, so I've stayed up watching episodes of Lost while Carolyn sleeps through the first morning of her two-day university holiday.

Today the world appears as I'd always assumed Scotland would appear; it's miserable, dank, windy. The sky is a coat made of sopping cat fur. I will be perfectly content to stay inside all day long if I have to, especially considering the walking I've been doing with Richard these last few days. We actually took a guided tour of a section of a recently opened section of vaults underneath South Bridge yesterday, where all manner of seedy debauchery and, later, a spate of commercial body snatchings, once took place. The tour guide, a fiery-headed young guy with a prediliction for suspensful pauses in his yarns, made sure to repeatedly warn us that, yes, people do occasionally get hurt down there and, yes, he has seen hands come out of walls and rocks fly across room of their own accord. Richard particularly buy into it, but it doesn't take much to spook me, so I walked through the rooms in a state of perpetual unease, not the least of which was due to the fact that the ceilings in there are about 5-7 feet, which made for some bendy walking on my part.

But no ghosts, thank jeebus.

more later.
