Higher-pitched than my normal voice, more folksy than my receptionist voice, almost as pedantic as my teaching voice: it's my customer service voice! It's chipper, it's perky, it's chirpy; it's a little loud, but it comes with a lot of eye contact and a big smile. Key words and phrases:

  • "May/Can I help you/getchoo something?" or just a two-syllable, interrogative "Hi-i!" (high to low in pitch).

  • The word "sure", with variations in inflection: "Sher!" "Sure thing." "Shoo-were."

  • "Can I getchya something else?" "Is that enough for ya?" "Anything else for you tonight?"

  • A heaping helping of "ma'am" and "sir"

  • A hearty "you're welcome" after their "thank you"

  • "Allrighty," which often slips out, making me feel dorky immediately afterwards

It's not exactly me, when I'm in customer service mode, but it's not a hard role to play. And hey, probably the only time I'll get paid for my acting. Though I don't think I'll ever be able to convey believable regret (or conceal the relief in my voice) when I inform a customer that no, unfortunately, we aren't carrying head cheese at the moment.
