What a catch, what a catch

Seriously, Fall Out Boy's "What a Catch, Donnie" should have been titled "Catchy, Donnie". I cannot get it out of my head. I haven't even decided if I like it, I just can't keep it out. The single artwork is cool, at least. (In contrast, the cover for "Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet" is terrifying.)

The thing that is making me flip back and forth the most is the Friends of FOB singing lines from earlier FOB songs. In Costello's case, it's not much earlier, as HSICoaBB is the previous single. I can't decide if it's gimmicky or not. It does reinforce my opinion of each singer - Saporta sounds great to me, I want more of McCoy, and Urie's voice grates like it almost always does.

Also, Patrick is trying to use the bottom part of his range and not quite succeeding, which bugs. It bugs for two reasons - I know he could hit it if he had a vocal coach, and he actually did use his lower range with great effect when he covered "Tom Traubert's Blues". Maybe the difference here is that he got to stay in the low part of his register for all of TTB, and he has to use almost his entire range for WaC,D. Still, I know he could do it, and do it well, so it bugs to hear it come so close, and yet so far.

The last iffy part is the "na na nanana nana" bit. It's part of what makes it so catchy, but it can grate really quickly.

Here's what the Friends of FOB Chorus sing over the end - as soon as Gabe starts, it's almost (but not quite) a round. Which is kind of cool.

Elvis Costello, "Headfirst Slide Into Cooperstown on a Bad Bet":
I will never end up like him
Behind my back, I already am
Keep a calendar
This way you will always know

Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship), "Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy":
Where is your boy tonight?
I hope he is a gentleman
Maybe he won't find out what I know
You were the last good thing

Travis McCoy (Gym Class Heroes), "Sugar, We're Goin' Down":
We're going down, down in an earlier round
And sugar, we're goin' down swinging

Brendon Urie (Panic At The Disco), "Dance, Dance":
Dance, dance, we're falling apart to halftime
Dance, dance, and these are the lives you'd love to lead
Dance, this is the way they'd love
If they knew how misery loved me

Doug Neumann (Doug Does Decaydance), "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race":
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race
This ain't a scene, it's a goddamn arms race

Alex DeLeon (The Cab), "Thnks fr th Mmrs":
One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories
Even though they weren't so great
He tastes like you, only sweeter

William Beckett (The Academy Is...), "Growing Up":
Growing up, growing up
