Concert Report - My Chemical Romance, Warfield Theater, Thursday, April 3rd.

Whoooooo. (Oh, yeah, no pics because the band instituted a "no camera" rule. IDK.)

Opening Act: Drive By. Meh. The backup vocals/guitarist was cute, but the lead singer/guitarist was... not good. The music wasn't bad, in and of itself, but there was nothing really differentiating it from anything I'd hear on the radio. Therefore, one looks to the band and especially the frontman to sell it. He didn't - he sort of gave off the attitude like we should be looking at him because he was on stage, and he would prance about for us and pose because he was on stage. I didn't feel like he had a connection to the music or to his band at all.

Middle Act: Billy Talent. Holy hell, YES. Charismatic as hell frontman, and all those mofos know how to rock. A little hardcore, a little psychobilly, completely their own thing, and absolutely fun to watch. (Though their music on MySpace isn't as dynamic as the live stuff. Huh.)

Headlining act: My Chemical Romance. Dude. Dooooooooooooooood. Dude. Gerard's pants still have holes in them, and he wore the holey jean jacket. \o/!!! Iero is sick, poor baby. He was wearing a driver's cap, a buttondown shirt, a cardigan.... he was basically bundled up. He wandered over to Bob and to Toro a few times, but motly stayed on his side, drooping to his knees every once in a while. MikeyWay is still wearing the "Mikey Fuckin Way" shirt (MADE OF WIN), and has the whole "looking animated" thing down pretty well. I think Bob enjoys having Dewees back there with him (James Dewees is on this tour as their keyboard player, and may join the band fulltime), and Toro headbangs even when playing acoustic. Bob had the mic at one point! I think he said all of a word, but still. smonsterbite and I were in the pit, so I don't remember set order or even all of what they played, but they definitely played: "Dead!", "Sharpest Lives", "Teenagers", "I Don't Love You", "House Of Wolves", "Sleep", "The Black Parade", "I'm Not Okay", "Cancer", "Desert Song", "Headfirst For Halos", "Helena", "Hang 'Em High", "I Never Told You What I Do For A Living", "Famous Last Words", "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison", "This Is How I Disappear", and some song no one knew. They also played "Kill All Your Friends, a b-side for Parade. Someone requested "Cubicles", and Gerard laughed, called him a crazy motherfucker, and said the dude'd have to sing it because Gee can't remember it. There was also a puppet!Gee that finally got passed up to the stage, and it got brought out by one of the techs to say hello.

smonsterbite and I were in the middle of the pit, and whoo. First of all, there's a distinction between shoving and moshing. Learn it, people. Secondly, damn, I'm tired. We're going up a tier tomorrow - still standing, but not in the midlde of the pit. HOWEVER, we were less than 10 people away from the stage at all times, which was pretty fucking awesome.

When they started "Famous Last Words", Frankie went over to Bob and talked to him for a bit. In my head, Frankie was asking if Bob was going to get burned up at the end of the song and Bob was replying "I don't know!!". He was smiling and laughing, at least.

Gereard is a hell of a frontman, I tell you what. And I'm tired, so I leave you with pics of S & me pre- and post-show. Smooches!!!
