Disclaimer ~ I disclaim disclaimers and claim Jack’s greatcoat.

Notes ~ Just finished watching “End of Time”. Damn it. This little ficlet came to me suddenly and I jotted it down. Though it doesn’t REALLY contain spoiler for that episode, it does refer to something that came as a lovely surprise at the end, so you may want to refrain from reading until you’ve seen it.

Maybe it was always meant to happen, just like this. Maybe the Doctor had known.

They joked about Alonso being a sailor who’d never been out on a real ocean, and Jack an air force captain who’d never flown a real plane. “Captain,” Alonso called him. “Lieutenant,” Jack responded, as they clinked glasses. (Alonso’s promotion still felt false to him. It wasn’t as if he’d really done anything so heroic, really.) They sat there in uniforms that belonged to an age and a place that no longer existed and drank and laughed.

Jack enjoyed making Alonso blush. That first night, he made him blush often.

Alonso was lonely because he’d never really had anyone. He’d been alone for a long time, but had never gotten used to it. Jack was lonely because he’d had someone once, not so long ago, but didn’t anymore. Both of them were afraid to get too close, but they did anyway.

It was Jack’s idea that they should go travelling together. Alonso liked structure, liked his routine, but he liked Jack more. Standing at a window, Jack pointed to a star at random and said, “That way.” Alonso nodded, cheeks flushed with excitement. They would do more than travel. They would have adventures.

It was on Raxacoricofallapatorius that Alonso spent the worst two minutes of his young life with Jack’s still, lifeless body cradled in his arms. When Jack finally gasped in a huge breath and opened his eyes, he had hadn’t known whether to be furious or relieved. In the end, he’d been both, and Jack just held him while he raged and cried and laughed.

There were times when Jack sat in the dark and watched Alonso sleep. He wasn’t Ianto, but that was all right. Jack thought Ianto might have liked Alonso, so maybe he wouldn’t mind so much.

They never talked about the Doctor.
