It's nice out.

It's real nice out.

If he can see anything, Ennis can see that from his room.

Means he's something of kind of stir crazy (when he ain't doped to the gills), but can you blame him?

God help the person who tries to cheer him up today.

At least Sallie said her prayers this morning.

"Wèi, Ennis," and Sallie enters without knocking, food tray in one hand and a spatula hanging out of one apron pocket.

Ennis grumble something under his breath (possibly, Wèi, my ass, but we'll never know) and coughs into the handkerchief that don't bother stayin' in his pocket no more. He usually manages to give Sallie a grudging smile -- or Jack does, in his stead -- but Jack's gone to get something to eat himself, and Ennis don't much feel up for it.

"Morning," is what he does say. Eventually.

"So it is." Her voice is bright enough, but a little too businesslike as she sets the tray down on the floor by Ennis' bed.

It's just broth and rice, but the smell of beef from the kitchen probably indicates leftovers that she could go get if Ennis felt up to something a bit heavier.

"I bought new Long Pai cards yesterday in town, if you'd wanna play."

Sallie's business-like tone puts Ennis even more on-edge.

('course, if it hadn't been business-like, it'd probably have been too mushy for his liking, either.)

He makes a face at the broth, but asks for the bowl anyway.

"Don't know how."

The words are as gruff and raspy as ever for all that they come out slow and quiet and breathy.
