Now that I'm going off to college, living on my own and all that jazz, I want to be able to move around. Going off to school can't be that different from staying at home if you're still confined to the immediate area, right?

Actually, this was all really informative. I think I have something of a grasp of how to get home, now, at the very least. Thankfully, Metra is good about providing info, it seems.

Sadly, I still don't quite get how Amtrak has all their stuff laid out, but looking the rest of the country can probably wait til I have my shit together. Most of my long weekends are during the second semester, anyways.

Thank you! Here, have a visually interesting if odd present: http://probertson.livejournal.com/

When I was in Chicago, I rode the Metra with some regularity and also the Amtrak to get down to Bloomington to see Elita. It's really not too troublesome at all to use the trains to get around. You basically need to know when to expect them and when they'll be dropping you off. You use smaller local lines to get to major rail or bus hubs and those can take you to other cities. Google Maps has a feature that allows you to figure out a schedule from point A to point B using mass transit only, so I'd recommend making use of it.
