Optimist

My dad just got back from his Lapeer Optimist Club board meeting. There was discussion about possibilities for the first female member to be inducted into the club. There is someone they are considering, but my dad mentioned to the club that I might be interested after I graduate. The club members would probably approve of me joining, considering they all know me from working one of their fundraisers for more than ten years. I have never given joining the club any thought because I have always known it as a mens club. However, if I am able to find a job near Lapeer then I am sure I would like to become a member of the Lapeer Optimist Club. Although there may be some guys who may not be too willing to have a female in the club, I think I will be willing to handle it. My dad says that there are only two or three Optimist Clubs in the state of Michigan that are not co-ed.

At first I was a little concerned that being in the club that is perceived of having a connotation of drinking because they run the beer tent during Lapeer Days. I thought this might be a conflict with being a teacher, but one of the Optimist members is on the Lapeer School Board. Also, the motto of the club is "Friend of Youth".
