most of my brain space has been devote to moving and my apartment stuff
I’ve done such exciting things as buy containers at the container store
my brain space is also taken up by work stuff and school stuff
so I thought I’ll give a better update as to what is going on with work stuff and school stuff
school stuff
- I’ve crafted one annotated bibliography and I’m crafting another
the bibliography is my favorite part
the actual paper writing is less fun
but much easier since I make pretty detailed bibliographies
my librarian skills are making me a even more awesome student
work stuff
- I love my job
I was reading a post entitled “
Is It Possible to Feel Passionate About Being a Tax Consultant?” over at the blog
study hacks which got me thinking about notions of passion and work
I am passionate about my work. I don’t think I went to library land because I was ‘following’ my passion. I liked the look of the
Librarian’s page from the Bureau of Labor Statistic’s Occupational Outlook Handbook. According to them “Librarians use the latest information technology to perform research, classify materials, and help students and library patrons seek information.” I am passionate about information, and technology. Additionally it’s a job that keeps me out of the sun and in the ivory tower.
The Study Hacks post suggests that there are 3 traits that
“disqualify a job from something you can feel passionate about:
1. The job presents few opportunities to distinguish yourself by developing relevant skills that are rare and valuable.
2. The job focuses on something you think is useless or perhaps even actively bad for the world.
3. The job forces you to work with assholes. (A term I use in only the most official, academic sense.)”
1) I can distinguish myself in my job and most of what I’m doing is developing relevant skills that are rare and valuable - boy, suddenly I feel lucky that government documents are so tricksy.
2) I love helping people find information, and that’s the heart of my job. Likewise I feel like by working at the City College of New York I can help awesome students get a fantastic education without accruing mountains of debt.
3) I love my co-workers.
So, to summarize, work stuff is awesome.
