Two pet peeves.

"I wouldn't equate it with Barack Obama being elected president in the States," said a source familiar with the inner workings of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, the parent company of the Leafs, "but it's likely to have the same kind of seismic impact up here."

The above quote refers to the fact that Brian Burke and Ron Wilson - both Americans - now hold the positions of General Manager and Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs, respectively.

Pet peeve #1: Whenever someone (speaking on any topic) says, "I'm not comparing this to X, but it's really a whole lot like X."

Pet peeve #2: Whenever someone (often a sports person but occasionally you see it in every field) compares a small event of consequence to at most a couple million people who are fans of the team in question to an event several orders of magnitude larger.

No, two Americans running the Leafs (or Sens, or Habs, or even the Canadian freaking National Team) is not in any way comparable to a black man being elected President of the United States. Shut up.

stupidity, media, american politics, hockey
