Today, Sabrina and I went to La Ronde. The park was full of fleurs de lys as one would expect for St-Jean, but it wasn't as crowded as I expected, at least. The funniest thing we saw is something that I'm looking for an explanation of.
We were in line for the Vampire when I noticed ahead of us a group of... how shall I say this? If they were quoted in Overheard in New York, the descriptors would've been "Thug #1", "Thug #2", etc... So, there was a group of black men ahead of us that looked like they just stepped out of a rap video. One of them was wearing a shirt that Sabrina assumed he'd bought in its present state, but I assumed he bought it and then either altered it himself or, more likely, had someone customize it. On the back of the shirt in cursive writing, it said, "I got the smurf around my neck".
I asked Sabrina if she knew what the meaning of this odd phrase was. She did not. It didn't end there, though. When dude turned around, we saw that on the front of his shirt, in graffiti-style, was a large image of smurf. But the best part? He was wearing a necklace, and hanging from it was one of those little Smurf figurines that I'm sure we're probably all familiar with. The smurf was holding a giant cheeseburger.
Does anyone know if there's, like, some sort of element of the population that finds Smurfs cool at the moment? It seems unlikely, but I don't know what else to make of this.
