Okay, I'm going to do some complaining some things in the news here.
1-Look at
this.
"Ottawa Senators coach Bryan Murray finds it 'sad' that his eight-year-old grandnephew, Jared Murray, has been banned from a West Quebec hockey tournament because he has been deemed to be 'bigger and stronger' than his fellow competitors."
"Bigger and stronger", huh? In the third paragraph, actually, they cut to the chase.
"Hockey Outaouais officials ruled him ineligible for the regional playoffs, claiming he's too dominant to play at the B level, considering he scored 51 goals in 17 games."
"Too dominant". In other words, the kid is too good. Which is total bullshit. What kind of message does that send to the kids? Don't get too good, or else you won't be allowed to play anymore? Unless someone is doing something to get an unfair advantage - and there's no evidence of that here - they need to be allowed to play. When I played hockey around that age, I played in a league with two teams: my team, the Eagles, and the other team, the Hawks. For three months, we would play no one but each other, and then we'd send an "all-star team" with players from both teams to take on an "all-star team" from Crystal Beach. And that was our season. And you know what? For two full seasons, the Hawks kicked our ass every game. It was kind of dispiriting, but it's not like I'm scarred by it to this day or anything.
Children are just generally too coddled today.
2-On CBC Radio this morning, they were talking about a plan to bring a
Can-Am League baseball team to Montreal. I only half heard it, but basically it sounded like they were going to run the franchise almost as a kind of co-op, to keep the team from suffering the same fate as my late, beloved Expos.
It will be a sad, pale imitation at any rate, and I can't believe it will work.
3-How is it that the Western media has glossed over
this as much as it has, in the context of the British sailors? I would think that this little story would be worth a mention at least, in all those articles. A paragraph? Something? No?
