Ok, so I'm having major fun with The Legend of Korra so far, the show's great, I'm happy how much work is put into it. I love the characters, love the setting, LOVE the music. Fights are beautifully choreographed, bending is exciting and all. But there's one thing that angered me enormously in last, 5th episode. And that thing was the main point of that episode. Meaning, setting up romance.
When first trailers and pictures were shown, I was all for Bolin/Korra pairing. I adore guys his type, who are tough but sweet and caring at heart and have a fun element to them. While the show progressed, I started leaning towards Mako/Korra, because they did look like a fun and nicely cooperating couple. And it seems like Mako needs some energy and fun in his life, because he's all serious>< Now, latest episode made it clear that Legend of Korra is not only an American production but also a kids' show. How? By setting up one possible pairing and ridiculing the other. In the freaking FIFTH episode! That's not how you make romantic element of the show interesting. I know the episode was supposed to be lighter after last week's difficult clash with Amon. I know they wanted to show characters' development. But it's not the way. I started leaning towards Mako/Korra because they started showing Mako's personality THROUGH show's main events and his cooperation with Korra. And it was fun. The scene in the park, as cheezy as it was, after the whole episode's set up was PERFECT. Why can't they make something similar to Bolin? Why does he have to always be in the shadow of his brother and be the source of comedic relief only? Why can't a fun brother develop some personality as well? That's the main problem I've always had with the Avatar series and rarely have it with Japanese productions. In animes, there's variety. They're usually building up all sorts of characters, setting them up in various situations and at the end, they often determine one pairing. Often, but not always. Take for example Ouran. It's a pretty ridiculous series with a bunch of silly characters. But all of those characters have history. All of them have the other, darker side. All of them interact with each other, throughout the whole series. And the anime (not the manga) never gave us a One True Pairing. It let the viewers choose what they liked best. So I'll never forgive the creators of Korra for making Bolin look super cool during the match and later get his heart broken because his brother's indecisive. I liked that Korra was determined enough to actually talk to Mako about her feelings. I liked that Bolin first poured his heart down his cheeks and let it drown in piles of food, to get set and strong at the end. But I don't like it that each and every character in Avatar has to have a label, a frame, and can't get out of it at all.
Tl;dr, I'm mad that they're setting up one pairing by ridiculing the other so early into the show. Fin
