The Second Agreement

I received a most unusual call last night, unusual because he doesn't call me at home all that often. He needed to talk, which was also unusual because he can be a Guy sometimes and simply refuse to say anything (for fear of what, one wonders, but never for long) and so we talked, or at least I did a lot of the talking and asking of questions. Then I gave him my non-judgemental observations, as well as some perfectly judgemental observations, and we finished.

He must like my observations, judgemental or not, because he keeps asking for them. This could be flattering if I took it personally. And he often appears to act on some of them, which could be scary if I though about control. But this is just the apprenticeship program at work, and one day, he will be obliged to do the same for someone else.

I take pains here to point out that in the Christian ethic, he must take care of himself first and foremost, before he begins to try to take care of others, one other in particular.

He has some tough times to go through before he finds peace.
