A Day Without Gays
I have this event on my FB account, and wanted to share it here. I plan to participate in the Non Consuming part, and see if I can get the day off work too. I wanted to share here in case anyone has NOT seen this.
Having a civil right taken away from us in California really brought this home to me, and has made me much more open about my rights, and what I expect from my country. It's true, we pay taxes, and we deserve to be treated equallyt, no matter who we are or what we are.

Should we take a stand, even in these troubled economic times?
We are calling for a nationwide strike and economic boycott by all members of our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered community AND OUR STRAIGHT ALLIES on December 10th, 2008, International Human Rights Day.
WHY SHOULD WE DO IT?
Because LGBT workers, business owners, consumers and taxpayers contribute over $700 billion to the American economy and we deserve the same rights as all other Americans.
Because marriage is a basic human right for ALL Americans, regardless of gender, race OR religion. (See the US Supreme Court Case LOVING v VIRGINIA).
WHAT SHOULD WE DO?

Strike! Call in gay, shut down your business, or just take the day off.
Boycott! Don't buy anything, spend money or support the economy.
WHY THE NAME "A DAY WITHOUT GAYS"? The name was inspired by the film A DAY WITHOUT A MEXICAN and the nationwide strike in 2006 called A DAY WITHOUT IMMIGRANTS that protested against proposed immigration laws.
WHY STRIKE NOW? One day won't destroy the economy, but it will send a clear signal that we are serious about getting our rights. Also, strikes and boycotts are more effective in an economic downturn because business owners have more to lose.
WHY A STRIKE AND A BOYCOTT? These tactics have been successful in the past, from the Montgomery Bus Boycott to the anti-apartheid boycotts. Their actions often came at a great sacrifice but they were willing to risk everything for their rights.
WHAT IF I WILL GET FIRED? In fact, many states still do not have employment non-discrimination laws for gays and lesbians. If you are in fear of getting fired, go to work, but you can participate in the boycott by not consuming. Pack a lunch!
WHY NOT CIVIL UNIONS? Because Civil Unions are only legal in the state that offers them, Civil Unions don't include the 1100 marriage rights and benefits provided by the Federal Government. Finally, separate but not equal is discrimination.
ISN'T MARRIAGE A RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION? No. Because every couple in America has to get a marriage license issue from their state, whereas religious ceremonies are optional. In addition, no religion is or should be forced to marry anyone.
SHOULDN'T WE DEFEND MARRIAGE? Gays and Lesbians are embracing marriage. If you want to defend it, ban divorce.
WHAT ABOUT THE SANCTITY OF MARRIAGE? How sacred is marriage if over 50% of them end in divorce? Marriage became a legal institution once the law permitted certain rights and benefits to be ascribed to people who have engaged in matrimony.
WHAT ABOUT THE TRADITION OF MARRIAGE? Marriages used to be between a man and multiple women, a business deal where property was exchanged for a wife, banned in churches, arranged by the parents and for same race only.
WHAT ABOUT TEACHING KIDS ABOUT GAYS? Would you tell your kids they should not learn about the American Indians or the Holocaust or Christianity? How is this any different?
