So going back about 8 or so years I began contemplating going natural before every perm. Basically once I get new growth I have an internal heart-to-heart and think "maybe this time I won't perm." my "best cousin" just told me she was going natural. i was shocked just because a few days before i was having a hair convo with a shared cousin and we both were like "yeah...chassidy will NEVER go natural". so that's almost how surprised i feel reading your post.
i like the site bglhonline.com
i think transitioning over a longer period of time, and just trimming off pieces at a time seems like the easiest thing to do. i've "gone natural" at least 3-4 times, and transitioning was less dramatic for me.
i need to get up on the youtube tutorials so i can figure out something more interesting to do with my hair.
anyway, happy transitioning!

To this day, I don't know what hair type I am. I know I'm 4. Whether it's a, b, c, or d... who knows? But I don't really worry about the categories. I just know my hair is very tightly coiled in most places on my head. lol
Anyway, I encourage your choice to go natural! I'm in the "big chop" camp, but obviously do what makes you feel most comfy. You know I'm there if you have any questions.

Oprah's hairstylist created a system of categorizing hair types. Essentially a way of noting what type of curl you have from loose to tight (going from 1-4 respectively).
