I hang out with a lot of rockers of color, punks of color, etc. Besides the problematic labeling of rock as a "white" genre, lots of rockers have to deal with the double-sided issue of racism within rock by white audiences, as well as the perceptions by persons of color about rock being a "white" thing. Most musicans follow a calling because it resonates deep with them - it seems to be the form that their creativity was made to utilize. While I see rock and hip-hop as different genres, I do think that the past rockers of color deserve their place alongside their white rock gods.

Elvis sang songs he'd heard all through the south that were collectively sung. No one 'owned' the blues standards, because everyone was singing them at the same time. Elvis took those songs and got rich and fat off of them, and furthermore, never gave the old musicians or even the recorded artists at Chess Records (where he got his songs) the props or respect or money from all his fame...Elvis is a previous generation's Vanilla Ice - gaudy clothes, funky hair, stolen music, worshipped by the devils.
