An idea I hatched a while ago decided to make itself known today =D

"Shhh. We've gotta be real quiet 'ere. Some've the animals in 'ere can get a little skittis and well..."

Hagrid looked up at his companion.

"You're a little intimidatin', y'ken?"

Hound smiled and nodded, slightly embarrassed, but the eager shine in his optics went undimmed.

"Of course. I suppose I'm used to being much larger than most of the inhabitants of this planet by now... although, perhaps not all?"

Hound cocked his head to the side questioningly and Hagrid laughed in response, booming chuckles rolling through the otherwise quiet forest.

"Ahah, yer right 'bout that! You Autobot fellers are big and all, but a dragon'r a sphinx'd prob'ly outsize some of yer 'f it wanted to, for sure!"

Hound started to ask more questions, but cut himself off suddenly as Hagrid pressed a finger to his lips and waved a hand.

"Cor, what beauties."

Hound leaned over and slowly curled into a crouch, balancing on the balls of his feet. As he peered over Hagrid's shoulder, his lips curled into a wide, enamoured grin.

"Is that... are those unicorns?"

"Aye, and- wait. Lookit, d'you see those flashes of gold 'round that bush?"

As the two watched the unicorn herd in breathless silence, Hound did indeed see a flash of gold, and then much more than a simple flash.

"Primus..."

Several small golden foals slowly rose from the cover of the brush, shaking itself and snorting. Hagrid grinned.

"Ah, just woke from a li'l snooze, 'e did."

One foal standing slightly away from the rest of the heard tossed its head playfully, then its eyes locked with Hound's. The bot froze.

"H-Hagrid. It's looking- ohdearPrimusit'scomingoverhere."

A frantic look developed on Hound's face and his head whipped towards Hagrid.

"What do I do?"

Hagrid smiled beatifically and spread his hands out in front of him.

"Jest be gentle, ye ken? The foals are the curious ones, learnin' 'bout the world an' all that. The herd's not gonna get mad, if tha's what yer worryin' about. See they're just watchin' us from the corner of their eyes, but they're not tryin' t' run us off or anythin'. The animals 'round 'ere know me a little. Since you're with me, they'll trust you too."

Hound nodded slowly. As the foal trotted towards him, calm as can be, the mech looked to Hagrid one last time, but the man just stepped back and shooed him forward.

"Go on!"

And so, that was how Hound found himself kneeling in the middle of the Forbidden Forest, hand outstretched in greeting to an inquisitive little foal, who nuzzled at his fingers and sneezed softly.

"Hey there little guy. You have no idea how glad I am to have met you."

Hound murmured softly, trying to avoid startling his new friend and hesitantly, he lifted his hand to the foal's mane with the lightest of touches.

"I'm Hound."

The foal looked up with an intelligent gleam in its eyes, then it made a whuffing sound and flipped its tail. Hound chuckled.

"Guess you're not impressed, huh? Heh, guess I wouldn't be either."

He blinked when the foal nickered and rubbed its cheek against his fingertips, then laughed.

"Hey Hagrid, this little guy's pretty friendly, huh?"

Hagrid smiled bittersweetly.

"Aye, I'd imagine 'e would be."

Hound ruffled the foal's forelock, then turned to Hagrid with a questioning look on his face.

"Why's that? Did something happen?"

Hagrid paused.

"I... try t' take care o' all the creatures in the forest, but sometimes bad things just happen. This one's mother got herself badly injured in a storm a while back. Broker her leg in a panic and never quite recovered. After all the effort of givin' birth, she just ... faded away over time."

Hound frowned and then turned back to the foal that was looking up at him with huge luminous eyes.

"That doesn't sound right. Is there anything you can do?"

Hagrid shoved his hands in his pockets and sighted sadly.

"Wish I could do somethin' for 'im, but I don't have the time or the space a foal'd need to grow up proper. I'm a teacher 'ere, y'know, an' I also take care of the grounds. This little one'd need twenty-four hour attention, t'make sure he was gettin' enough exercise and proper things to eat. An' the herd'll look after 'im enough. Maybe not as well as his mother would've, but they'll keep 'im from starving and give 'im more company than I'd be able to."

Hound opened his mouth, paused, reconsidered, then pushed through and kept talking.

"Maybe ... hey, what does he eat, Hagrid?"

"Eh? Why'd you wanna know- oooh. Oh no. Hound, you're a good guy, but ye can't possibly be thinkin'..."

Hound hemmed and hawwed and shrugged, slightly embarrassment.

"Well... I've got a lot of time and ... hey, this little dude deserves love like any kid, y'know?"

Hagrid bit his lip and hummed and hawwed, then sighed and pated Hound on the shoulder.

"Alright then, we'll do a test run. See if he's okay with bein' away from the forest an' his herd. You'd best pick your new friend up and bring 'im with us. I'm going to need to teach you 'bout what unicorn foals need to grow up properly..."

Oh hey, my purple dragon hatched! If you'd click and think boy thoughts at these ones, I'd be really happy!
