Almost missed posting today...
And really, I don't have very much.
"It just doesn't make sense!"
"And that's different from normal how?"
Luke sipped at his coffee as he leaned against his kitchen counter, watching Danny pace the room.
"Why would the Crane Mother set a whole flock of her daughters to get a book that doesn't say anything about Orson?"
"Because she's a crazy obsessive bitch who can't let go?"
"No. I don't know. It just- This book isn't even a story, really. It's more of an appendix on all the information that gets referenced in the other books. There's a whole chapter on the flora of Nepal! Flora, Luke. There's a dozen different kinds of grass in here!"
Danny thumped his hand on the table, looking more worked up than Luke had seen him for a while. Then again, Orson was a touchy subject. Family always was for Danny.
"Maybe this Crane chick wants to work on her garden?" Luke sighed and picked up the book, idly flipping through the pages. "Hell, you know I don't do this crazy spirit-chi-glowy stuff. That's your thing. I stick to worrying about things that I can punch."
"I know..." Sighing, Danny ran a hand through his hair and slumped against the wall. "But that's why I came to you. You see things differently from me-- it's why we're such a good team. I was hoping you'd find something that I'd missed."
That sort of talking just left Luke feeling guilty. He scratched his head and flipped through the book again, thinking hard.
"Well, what if it's not the words that are important?"
"What do you mean?"
Luke waved a hand. "You know, like in the movies where they hide stuff in the book bindings or mix special herbs in the ink or something? What if it's that kind of thing only with, I don't know, mystic stuff?"
For a moment, Danny stared at Luke with a blank look on his face, then suddenly he burst into a wide grin.
"You... You are a genius!" He hugged Luke excitedly, then grabbed the book and spun on his heel, shouting, "I've gonna go see Stephen! See you later!" as he dashed out the door.
"Good luck, man!" Luke waved as Danny left, then flopped into his chair with a deep sigh.
"Finally. A little time to kick back-" That was, of course, when Dani started bawling from her room. A father's work is never done.
