She hadn’t expected to come through the Gate again. She was more than a little disoriented when she came to consciousness, not recognizing her own arms as she pushed herself up from the ground, nor the snow white hair that fell around her. It was like an odd dream-but she was dead, she couldn’t be dreaming anymore, could she?

But when everything repeated itself-the priests and soldiers alike approaching her, questioning her-it was all very real. She hadn’t expected the Gate to bring her back again-but if it had brought her here once out of death from her own world, why wouldn’t it bring her back again? In hindsight she realized perhaps she should have expected it-but… what had it done to her…? She was able to study her hands even as they guided her around. She had always had light skin for a Japanese woman, but was still fairly dark compared to many of the people there. But this was if the Gate had taken all of the color from her entirely, leaving nothing but a subtle pinkish hue. Her hair was completely white like an old woman’s. It made no sense to her at all. But then again, nothing made sense to her. Nothing had made any sense for a long time…

She was in a daze as she was lead about, reissued her ID and given a room assignment-which was the exact same as before. How long had she even been gone? It was still bitterly cold-and she could smell the stench of burning flesh in the air… It couldn’t have been very long…

She went cold, trying to come to terms with this. Someone else perhaps would have cried or broken down in either relief or despair-but surrounded by soldiers she wouldn’t allow herself to show as much weakness. And it really was one or the other at this point. Relief that she was alive… and despair over the fact that there really, apparently, was no escape from this hell-even in death the Gate would not let her go.

But for this death… she would have the chance to do something she was unable to do the first time. She could go to the people she’d hurt and apologize, even if the concept terrified her. She hadn’t gotten help, because she knew there was no help to receive. She hadn’t even told anyone… because of the two that concerned her… one would have tried to stop her… and the other would have felt the need to end her life himself.

And that was a burden she wasn’t prepared to become.

All of these thoughts raced through her head as she made her way back to Midgard, snowy hair unbound and trailing around her, her arms hugging herself in an attempt to keep warm. She wondered who had found her… what they had done with her… What it had caused…

She had thought she had grown used to feeling guilt in this time. It was something ever-present for her, but this was new and surely different from before. Reaching the courtyard, she stopped before the building, watching it for a long time. It was much like her first arrival, standing seemingly stuck and unable to will herself to move forward, even with the cold biting straight through her clothing and to her bones.

If she had felt like a ghost before… she was even more so now-in thought and appearance…
