It had been windy lately, and smells carried easily on the air. The odor of rotting zombie flesh was, of course, inescapable, but he could at least get some distance from the unpleasant smells of the neighboring apartment building. An annoyance with the city in general tended to stunt his curiosity about it, but there was still something to be said for exploring. While not the pleasant heat of his Netherworld palace, it was warm enough he'd dispensed with his shirt, and roamed the streets with his scarf blowing behind him, tiny wings exposed. He hid them at home, since they were such a sign of his youth, but the longer he was here, the less he wanted to, annoyed with constantly being mislabeled ( ... )

Not a sniffle nor a hic could be heard when she kept rubbing her eyes. Her wings drooped a little, occasionally still losing a few feathers here and there as new ones were growing in. Her wings ached and itched something terrible.

When she heard a familiar voice chime out, she abruptly looked up at Laharl with swollen red eyes, puffy from tears that were still gathering and spilling over the curves of her cheeks. Another soundless sniff and a shake of her head to his question.

Her hand released its hold on the broom handle, letting it clank on the ground and roll a few inches before it came to a rest. Small hands tugged on her shirt, lifting it up just a smidge to where the exposure of a deep bruise was starting to manifest itself. Her hands released the fabric that stayed somewhat up and she fished around for her notepad, writing a small note for him. Head butted by the man in the red mask.

It was worse somehow when she looked at him like that. He glanced away uncomfortably, but had to look back when she moved to explain what had happened. His frown deepened at the sight of the fresh bruise, and turned into something of a snarl at the scribbled note. He wouldn't have properly been able to explain his anger if pressed, but picking on weaklings was something only sickos took pleasure in.

"When?" he asked brusquely. "Is he still around?"

She lowered the book onto her lap and shook her head. Nill had no idea how long she had been out. Hours? Minutes? She didn't know. She just remembered the feeling of laying there in a heap with the pressure on her chest from when Deadpool walked over her. Kuukaku did say he worked for her. Maybe he went to see her. The thought of him being able to possibly say things while she was left with only a book to try and help her explain seemed unfair and in the back of her mind, she hoped she wasn't going to lose the only job she could manage.

Despite the pain in her stomach, she drew her legs up to where she could rest her head ontop of her knees, arms hooking under her thighs to just sit there in a small ball, wings arching in a vein attempt to curl around herself and hide herself from the world.

It wasn't much of an answer, and it left him frustrated. He glanced around again, noting the broken broom, and glanced at the nearby building. She'd been looking for a cleaning job, so probably she was working here. He'd have been unforgiving with his prinnies if they'd slacked off on the job like this, no matter the excuse, but he knew humans were a lot more lenient.

He looked back at Nill. If she didn't know where the freak was, did that mean he'd knocked her out with that blow? "...you just gonna sit there?"

With still faint trails of tears rolling down her cheeks from her eyes, she nodded. At least for the moment she just wanted to sit there. Maybe the sun would feel nicer if she remained still.

After another moment of not doing anything, she peeked out from her little ball with wide eyes staring up at him, still rather pink but not nearly as swollen. Her eyes just felt heavy, the kind that would go away with a nice nap after a long cry. But sadly this wasn't the place for a nap nor did she really want to go back to the apartments. Going back there would just further the break that there was no going home.

Again with that look, and she was still crying, but he didn't know how to make her stop. He raked a hand through his hair and let out a breath. "It's not such a great idea sticking around here," he told her. "The freak could come back."

She hadn't thought about that. Part of her hoped whatever it was that happened was just a bad dream. However, the thought of Deadpool possibly returning was enough to make her bruised stomach churn. Lord knows the next time he hit her or beat her up it wouldn't be to a point where he'd easily forgive.

Strange flashbacks of her time before the church occasionally flickered on the screen of her memory. Another dizzying feeling of illness... She nodded to Laharl and slowly tried to raise up, clutching onto her stomach all the while.

Laharl watched her, folding his arms across his chest. If she could stand on her own, she'd stand on her own; far be it from him to offer help when it wasn't needed. It was strange enough for him to bother making sure she didn't.

The last thing Kaoru had ever expected to find himself doing was wandering into a brothel; but since Nill had told him about her new job, he'd wanted to drop by and make sure she was doing all right - not... being propositioned, or anything. The girl inspired a protective instinct in him: he just wanted to check up on her. That was all.

So his heart plummeted at the sigh of Nill curled up on the floor. He called her name, darting in front of Laharl and running to kneel by her. The situation probably wasn't the way it looked, but he knew certain short people who could pack a heck of a punch. He wasn't going to take any chances.

"What happened?" He asked softly.

While raising up, a familiar voice rang out that caught her off guard. Kaoru? She shot her head up to gaze at him running to her, his taller self hunching a bit as she was hallway off of the ground.

She quickly tried to pull her hair down over her scratched face. Somehow lately when Kaoru's seen her, she had been losing blood in some kind of way. With his question, she fumbled for her notebook, holding up the writing she wrote for Laharl. Head butted by the man in the red mask.

Laharl gave a start as the human boy ran past him to crouch by Nill, and then glowered down at him as though he were interrupting something. So this was how humans reacted, he guessed, all obvious and excessive concern.

"Who're you?" he demanded.

All right, so NOT the guy standing over her. That was a relief in itself, though he wasn't sure he knew the man Nill was telling him about.

"Kaoru." He threw back at Laharl by way of explanation, his attention firmly fixed on Nill as he gently tried to stroke her hair back from her face, "Please don't hide from me, Nill-chan. Did anything else happen?"

Her eyes glanced back to Laharl and a hand waved back and forth, gently clutching onto Kaoru's sleeve to show that he was a friend of hers. Even if Laharl didn't really seem to understand the concept, she at least didn't want some kind of fight to break out.

Tear stained eyes and cheeks tilted up to look at the orange haired boy. She wasn't good at lying and hiding things was something she didn't want to do from someone who had helped her so many times. So shyly, she peeked down and lifted the hem of her jacket and shirt, just over her stomach to the swelling bruise.

He relaxed a fraction at Nill's show of trust in the tall brat, but still annoyed with his presence, he looked off elsewhere with a scoff.

"He knocked her out or something," he said gruffly, as though being forced to speak against his will. "And she shouldn't be sticking around here, so don't waste time."

He watched as Nill revealed the growing mark, an expression of anger, then shock crossing his features.

"Oh Nill-chan..." he sighed, still caressing her hair in a gesture of comfort, "He hit you pretty hard, didn't he? When did this happen?" He glanced between her and Laharl, offering his hands to the girl to help her stand.
