Allen blinked a moment in confusion, a gift was the last thing he'd expected ( ... )

Fou risked a glance at him when he took the not-gift, immediately regretting it when she saw that smile. And goddamn it, couldn't he keep his hair out of his eyes for five minutes?! Squeezing her eyes shut and resisting the urge to push his hair from his face, she folded her arms tightly over her chest with a huff and a curt nod. At least he didn't know what else the knot stood for. That was the last thing she needed!

"Of.. of course I did! Like I could trust someone else to do it right. It wasn't easy, either! You're lucky I still remembered how!" In all honesty, she was a little surprised that she remembered, herself. It'd been almost twenty years since she last made one. Sure, it had its flaws-- it was a bit lumpy, and the tassels had already begun to fray, but it was made well enough to serve its purpose.

As cliche as the sentiment was, it was those imperfections that made it all the more important. She had made it for him, and it didn't exactly look simple to do. Allen didn't outwardly acknowledge what the gift was for at first, just what it was meant to represent. She was obviously embarrassed enough all ready --as much as she'd deny it, he's discovered that really isn't all that hard a reaction to come by ( ... )

She flustered at being presented with his gift, like they were doing some sort of... some sort of gift exchanging. Which was impossible, because she didn't get him any gifts. "Hey! Don't get the wrong idea here, Allen! That thing-- it wasn't a present, damn it! And it had nothing to do with what today is!"

But she had to look at him to set him straight, and that bashful smile he had would make her consider just about anything once. With no small amount of gruffness, she accepted the present but refrained from opening it just yet, regarding it with skepticism and a bit of curiosity.

((D: Oh Fou, you don't even know how lucky you are))

"I know, Fou. I just wanted to get you something nice anyway." More then once he wondered if she'll ever truly relax around him, but then he'd tell himself he's just being silly. A month was hardly much time at all in the grand scheme of things. He doesn't know much about how courting is done in China, but in England...

Needless to say they were doing it very wrong.

Not that either of them are known for following the rules. As much as he holds his pride as an English gentleman, the course of his very life has created circumstances so far beyond his control that when something good comes along he has started to cling to it with everything he has. Especially now, considering all he's lost ( ... )

She blinked up almost uncertainly at him for a moment, before focusing on the box again, bobbing her head in acknowledgment and calming down -- really calming down, as opposed to just her usual simmering, with a speed that few others besides Allen could manage to get her to do. Most of them weren't around anymore, anyway.

Slowly, she pulled off the lid of the box, and it left her more or less at the same place as she was before she opened it: skeptical and curious. One time with the hot chocolate didn't mean she was gonna start making eating stuff a regular thing. Not to say she didn't like it-- she did. It was a completely different kind of sweet than she'd had before, and it was good. And from the smell of these, it was the same kind of weird sweet. It wasn't like Allen was turning it into a regular thing, either. So for a gift, it wasn't so bad, then? Just sorting out how she felt left her staring at the confectionaries as if they were conundrums instead ( ... )

Allen fidgeted for a moment as he watched her open the box, the working fingers on his right hand worrying the tattered hem of his sweater sleeve. There were times when the boy seemed to hold a weight and wisdom beyond his years, yet there were others where he looked so young it was heartbreaking. An Exorcist first, but still just a boy.

And that boy watched on with a hopeful air as his Guardian Deity pulled open that box as though she were unwrapping another layer closer to his heart. His. That was a selfish thought, wasn't it. Yet somewhere along the line he started thinking in terms of 'us' and 'ours' and where the thought of 'alone' has almost become foreign.

"Roof?" Allen raised a curious brow as he watched the expression change on the tiny woman's face.

"You gotta problem with the roof, Allen?" The playful smirk faded almost as quickly as it appeared, replaced by a frown as Fou studied the chocolates. That kid seriously just couldn't leave things as they were, huh? As if he wasn't changing enough just by them being... them now. She just wondered when change stopped being a bad thing.

And so, with only a slight amount of hesitance, she picked up one of the truffles and brought it to her lips, taking a quick glance at Allen before plopping it in her mouth. Her reaction was immediate, head jerking up and her eyes wide with surprise as she looked at him. It was... really good!

"Not at all, love." He clasped his hands behind his back to keep himself from fidgeting as he watched her study the chocolates in a manner that made him wonder if she thought they were going to leap up and attack her.

Fou was his lion, but in many ways she reminded him of a bristly cat. She was fiercely territorial and regarded mostly things with a cautious air, circling them closer and closer until she deemed them worthy of what ever it was they were unknowingly being tested for.

One can pet her and hold her -but always on her terms. Too much to fast and she's liable to hiss and growl. Like any good cat lover, Allen is learning that complicated little dance that keeps him perched comfortably in her good favors.

Not without trial and error of course. "I'm guessing that means you like them, then?"

Fou ducked her head, face flushing as she rubbed her cheeks with the back of her large hand. Taking a moment to swallow the treat, she gave the tiniest nod. "There're worse things you could've gotten."

For someone who spent most of her existence just taking what she wanted, these gifts were pretty weird. Unfolding her legs out from under her, Fou slid off of the bed, standing as she almost reverently replaced the lid to the chocolates and left it on the nightstand next to the box that held the shard of her seal, her expression softening while she crouched down in front of the pair of boxes.

Allen just watched her with a small, quiet sort of smile. There were precious few things in life that can truly make him happy anymore. He finds contentment at times, small comforts, but it always ends up being hollow and transient. Yet despite the rough and sometimes jagged edges their relationship seems to have, she's found a way offer a measure of peace to cling to through the pain.

He moved closer to her, brushing the fingers of his right hand lightly through her hair. "When do you want to go up to the roof?"

((so sorry for the late and fail of post ;o;))

Fou turned her head towards him-- definitely not leaning into his hand in the slightest. Gently, she knocked his hand away from her hair with the back of her own, only to take the hand in hers. Yanking it towards her, she used it to bring him closer, leaning up to press her lips against his in a short, fierce kiss. Pulling back and smiling with no small amount of mischievousness, Fou stood up, her free hand resting on her hip.

"Now works-- if you think you're ready, Allen." she said with a cockiness that only the anticipation of a fight brought out in her. By her tone, though, it really didn't matter to her if he was ready or not.

If it was anyone else he'd have instantly tried to pull his hand away. Rape and torture does that to a person. It's narrowed his ability to trust into such a tiny circle that only she has room to stand. Even with his friends there are tense, knee-jerk reactions and a nearly ever present hypervigilance. He's always stood a step apart from everyone else, and now without the presence of his friends when he really needed them the most, that step has grown wider.

He still loves them all dearly, that will never change. But that closeness they shared is fading in this place, no matter how hard he tries to keep it from happening.

Allen met the kiss with a moment of surprise but that quickly changed into a dopey, boyish grin. He raised a brow at her expression, just knowing she had something interesting hidden up her non-sleeve. "I'm always ready, love~"

"Then hurry up, damn it! We don't have all day, you know!" Despite her harsh language, her smile turned a hint goofier as she tugged at his hand. Her face heated when she realized how childish she was being, if only for a moment, and she gave him one good yank towards the door.

Damn that infectious kiddy grin of his, and damn her for acting like some snot-nosed kid with him around! Oh, he'd pay, though-- she'd make sure of it. The fact was, they did have all day. While Fou was many things, patient was not one of them. Neither was forgiving.

"Eyaah!" Allen pinwheeled his free arm and scrambled a moment to keep his balance as he was nearly yanked unceremoniously off his feet. He actually laughed for a moment, something so rare for him these days. Rare to the point where even he couldn't really remember the last time he felt this lighthearted ( ... )

As much as it bugged her not knowing what the hell it was that kid was laughing at, Fou couldn't deny feeling lighter because of it. He was a total moron, no doubt about it, but he was her moron. Allen was precious to her, something she would fight to be able to treasure, and suddenly every one of that guy's smiles, every time she could just see him happy-- 'cause God knew he had it coming-- was precious, too.

So for the time being, her grip on him became a little less demanding as she led him from the room, and her smile grew some under the back of her large hand while she rubbed her flushed cheeks. He was safe to relax a little around... as much as she ever relaxed, at least.

It figured that it'd be here of all places. The Branch was a goddamn fortress, but she couldn't let down her defenses until she was in some shitty city surrounded by zombies with what had to be the most troublesome Exorcist she'd ever met ( ... )
