Book 29

Jun 25, 2011 11:10

*Leon's got a hat on, mostly to cover his ears so he won't draw too much attention as he walks about the Victory Square. He's just practicing his Russian, having found it's easier to read and write but still tricky to speak*

[He'd been heading home from his first job when he walked through Victory Square and heard the telltale signs of someone practicing Russian. He's a bit out of practice himself, although the version of him that had been here before had been more comfortable with it, so he figures he'll practice, too. He speaks up, in Russian of course]

It's not an easy language.

*He blinks and glances over- it's easy to pick out someone that isn't a native speaker. Leon smiles a little, nodding*

No, it's not. I'm better at reading it, I think.

[A nod]

I grew up with it, but it's been years since I needed to use it. Around here, though, I guess it's useful.

Different speaking over writing. You're much better than me.

It was what I was raised with. I have an advantage. Although, I learned German and French as a child, as well, and remember almost none of it. Except the profanities, of course.

[Then he switches to English]

How long have you been trying to learn Russian?

*Good thing too, because Leon was having trouble catching all of that- he thinks he gets the gist of it though*

Mmm.... As soon as they stuck me in the local school.

*He frowns a little*

...next month I'll have been here for a year...

And they probably aren't particularly concerned there whether you learn it or not, as long as you show up. I imagine the schools around here aren't exactly the best.

*He shakes his head* No, they don't seem to be. This...would be my first time going to a school like this so I don't have anything to really compare.

...don't really like it, though.

I don't blame you. Most Russian schools are terrible.

Makes for a great first experience then. *Totally sarcastic on that*

You should just stop going. You look old enough.

[Great influence right here, yep]

If I had the option I would, but it seems to be the only thing I can do around here.

I suppose finding work is hard enough for those of us who are considered old enough to do so.

Is it? I wouldn't know.

Do you know anything about construction? Building things?

[Kind of out of left field there, but hey]

*Blink*

If we're talking about architecture in general, I'll admit it isn't one of my strong points, but I helped design a weapon back home.
