i attended a stretcher demo today during class. it's kinda sad that i haven't learned how to properly construct canvas stretchers until the age of 25. times like this make me feel like a big poser. the instructor raffled off the two finished stretchers he made and i won the smaller one. it's not often that i win something, so i'm pretty happy about it. this class (painting materials and techniques) is making me a lot more self-sufficient. i now know how to construct a polished stretcher, make custom egg tempera (it's really made from eggs!), cut, prime, and gesso a panel, apply gold leaf, and use indirect (glazing) painting techniques. the artist book class i took last semester taught my how to create a custom bound book, too. if i can learn to weave canvas, make paper, and mine minerals from the earth i won't need to buy anything ever again!
sources for my thesis (sequential art in art therapy) keep falling into my lap. yesterday i bumped into a professor who's dissertation was on graphic novels and comics in education. my case study is coming along nicely too. my participant is taking more risks with his art making. the whole treatment team is excited about his process.
