An order of Pro-life, hold the hypocrisy please.

I'll give this to the American Pro-Life movement: just like any other solid and upstanding institution of modern American culture, they have become so riddled with hypocrisy that one wonders how they can possibly continue to hold credibility in the public eye. But like most other societal institutions, they have worked so hard to mangle reason ( Read more... )

The U.S. will not take a stand on the issue of the death penalty for a long time. It will only happen if we can make some money off of it or if it involves a middle class white girl getting lost in Aruba and all the sudden a media frenzy ensues because of its socio-economic status.

The United States will have to wait a very long time, a time when democrats are in power and exert influence over the country. We will pretty much (finally) follow in suit with the UK's social issue policy. In the 1960's they more or less abolished the death penalty and relatively recently, all guns were banned. Even policemen use them sparingly. And, I'll be damned, it works. But gun control would be opening up another can of worms. Maybe you can write a 4,000 word essay on that some other time.

Anyways, back to the death penalty. Neither the republicans or democrats will do anything about it right now because they don't have the guts. They would inevitably alienate their voters/money supply by taking a clear and bold stance on it. Most social issues, save gay marriage, are on the back burner right now. And even gay marriage is, at the time, fading into the background. Both major parties are too scared to shed light on any other social issues, and have their ugly heads rear in the public, in my opinion. But, logically, can you blame them? If they do that, they are playing a very dangerous game. Losing their precious voters would almost certainly hurt any future campaigns they might have.

So, for now, let's just keep looking to the terrorist West and wait for the queue to pee our pants when the terror alert raises. Isn't that much simpler than thinking?

It has worked by reducing the number of gun related deaths significantly. I'd like to see a reliable source to your evidence that violent crime soared afterwards. Even if it did, I have reason to believe that the rate eventually fell. According to this list, the United States falls amongst a bunch of third world countries that are "uncivilized" as being the 25th most murderous country in the world, and 8th among gun related fatalities: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_mur_cap and http://www.nationmaster.com/graph-T/cri_mur_wit_fir_cap The United Kingdom falls decently in place, but should be lower than it is. I'd say firearm hunting rights being taken away is a nice trade off for a few hundred thousand deaths a year.
