She has everything she ever wanted now, Marietta thought as she dropped the newspaper on her desk with the photo of the happy couple smiling gloriously up at her. She turned it over and sat down in her office trying to ignore the churning sensation in her stomach. She thought she was over this by now; she was dating someone who actually loved her back and despite original setbacks and resentments she had now gained a great position in the Ministry through an unexpected promotion. But seeing Cho and her new husband brought it all back and she wondered if it could have been different.
She had felt that deep, instant connection with the girl since their first meeting on the train bound for their new lives at Hogwarts. What started as a simple friendship turned into a great and devastating love on Marietta’s behalf. She adored Cho and she understood now that a love like that could never totally go completely. It was only until after Hogwarts that she had had a small hope that they could be something more. There had been an alcohol fuelled night, slurring of words and speaking hidden thoughts and then a night that, even looking back, Marietta would believe as one of the happiest of her life.
The weeks following had been like a slow, soft haze and she floated on a high. They met in secret in hotels and areas unlikely to be known by the wizarding world. Cho thought they should take it slow as she was still adjusting to it all. It hadn’t bothered her much, this was all she had dared hope for and under the cover of darkness she let out all the passion she had for the other girl. But it all started to go wrong when just having sex (despite how good it was) and nothing more began to irritate her. Soon they would argue over where to go, who would pay and there were times were Cho could be cruel and stand her up.
Marietta knew she was losing her. Men still sought her attention and she gave it freely, not caring if it hurt Marietta. In the bars that they occasionally went to Cho would smile and flirt with the men and Marietta felt every smile that was directed to some stranger as a thorn digging into her side. Boys thought she was living kindness but she learned that Cho wasn’t as kind and innocent as she appeared to be. Her idolized lover was fraying before her eyes and the more she saw the more she wanted to cling to the past and shut her eyes.
It hurt when, on the street under the rare English summer sun, Cho, with tears in her dark eyes, told her that it was over. It had been coming but it still took the breath out of her and her heart ached. She had met someone else, a Muggle man, Martin, and she really liked him. Martin, the name still tasted sour in Marietta’s mouth when she whispered it and now he was Cho’s husband.
Marietta buried her head in her hands but didn’t cry. No, she was done with crying and besides she had slowly begun to move on. Going to Cho’s wedding, standing there with a false smile watching the couple marry had forced her to the reality that she needed to get a grip. She had to live her life and not spent it pining after a lost love. A knock on the door had her head snap up as her girlfriend, Felicity Eastchurch, who was now high-profile journalist, came in with a grin on her face and a bottle in her hands. Marietta studied her for a second and then smiled at her standing up to greet her. Yes, she wouldn’t forget Cho but that was in the past and Marietta was all for living in the present.
