while i was in the hospital with viel, i decided it was the best time to learn how to knit socks. so i brought along my print out of the two-at-a-time toe-up using magic loop pattern from barb. i purchased these lovely sock yarns a while ago and also have these 40-inch circular knitting needles from addi turbo but have not done anything with them. plus i guess my curiosity has peaked. knitters say once you start on socks there's no turning back. me being me decided i would see what the fuss is all about!

i decided to use my shibui knits sock yarn, colourway stone 51302. it's springy, very soft and stripes nicely.

so i start with judy's magic cast-on instead of the figure 8 cast-on method. seems like not much difference to me but perhaps to the experts it does. also i am using a circular needle as i find it easier,or so i thought, and i still have some problems with DPNs (double-pointed needles). the cast-on went all okay and i started knitting the rows with increases. i hate that the edges roll up because it's stockinette but i suppose it will lay flat once the full toe is knitted up. it also looks weird because what is supposed to be the toe looks really funny. as i kept on knitting i find that it does go wider to fit my toe. i haven't gone so far yet, again with the time issue, but i am loving it!

one drawback: the confusion of yarn ends, tail ends, cable and needle tips almost drove me crazy! it does take a bit of getting used to and making sure i grab the right yarn end for the right sock.

and to match the booga bag made for viel, i made up the pattern and knitted this mobile phone case using the remaining noro kureyon no. 95. i wanted to sew on snaps but it wouldn't close so i crocheted a 12-stitch loop and sew on a button.

i'm new to felting and blocking so the thing stretched out far too much than i intended. if viel decides to get anew phone hopefully it would still fit!

next up, hats for the older kids! they've already chosen their yarn and patterns.
