Remember all that screaming I did about the internet ending a while ago? I was naturally only one person of very, very many screaming about this. And in a surprise twist, it looks like the internet actually might win this one.
White House rejects SOPA and PIPA. While we believe that online piracy by foreign websites is a serious problem that requires a serious legislative response, we will not support legislation that reduces freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risk, or undermines the dynamic, innovative global Internet.
Any effort to combat online piracy must guard against the risk of online censorship of lawful activity and must not inhibit innovation by our dynamic businesses large and small. Across the globe, the openness of the Internet is increasingly central to innovation in business, government, and society and it must be protected.
White House, Congressional Leaders Come Out Against SOPA In a letter, Darrell Issa, (R-CA) reported on Friday that House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) informed him that he will not bring SOPA to a floor vote until the bills flaws are addressed. In the Senate, however, Harry Reid is apparently still planning to move forward with the PROTECT IP bill.
This isn't a certain thing. There are still assholes so committed to being assholes that they are clearly willing to be assholes over the loud objections of literally almost everyone in the entire world except the RIAA/MPAA/associated copyright goons. But if nothing else, this makes me hopeful about the potential of a big enough loud enough crowd of pissed off people to still get things done.
[For something completely different]
The Atlantic on nine books on reading and writing. The top three together are pretty much my writing Bible, so.
You begin to string words together like beads to tell a story. You are desperate to communicate, to edify or entertain, to preserve moments of grace or joy or transcendence, to make real or imagined events come alive. But you cannot will this to happen. It is a matter of persistence and faith and hard work. So you might as well just go ahead and get started.

[finally]
slowshow is here visiting and on Friday we went to the
Calvert Cliffs and hunted fossils. Pretty good haul.
The ones at the top were actually gifted to us by a much more experienced fossil hunter we met. We still had tremendous good luck, though.
