Today was kinda crappy. Tuesdays usually are, as I have 7 classes on Tuesdays. Music Cultures was alright, and Form & Analysis was fine. Then after lunch, it started sucking. I had lessons with Brad and I stupidly wanted to start playing bones, so I sucked at bones for 10 minutes. Then I went back to work on congas, just to find that all the ( Read more... )

i pretty much only have a handful of decently close friends too, but the difference is that i'm the one always organizing events, to which i invite them. i realized they wouldnt know if i enjoyed being around them unless i make an effort to show it; since ive been putting together some get togethers (i have cooking nights, gaming nights, etc) the number of invites i've received to other things has increased, too.

have you tried talking to whoever runs the per dept? tell their ass what youre doing for them and what you want them to do for you; go to the top and see what happens.

gluck mate :)

Well, a while ago, I tried to get a drumline started asked two of our teachers, then asked all the percussionists who wanted to do it. Got maybe 1/3 yesses. Gave the list to the percussion department head, and he said there isn't really money for that. We also just recently lost a venue where we get paid a lot. And they had to cancel two guest speaker percussionists because of no money. On top of that, it's kind of like school pride. The teachers can be like "YEAH! LOVE SCHOOL!" but no one will. But you'd think that in college, where you're doing what you WANT to do, you'd have some pride.

actually we have to pay to use the carpenter center, and often we barely broke even on our pan shows there. being in the university theatre might be a really good move for us because we can keep all the revenue from ticket sales, which doesn't happen at CPAC.

yeah, UT is smaller than CPAC and not as grand, and it'll be harder to get people out to our show because it's a new, different location. but in the long run, like dr. c said, it might be better for us money-wise.

well frankly i'm waiting a little bit to invite my friends to our percussion concerts on facebook. i feel that if i invite people TOO early, some of them'll say "yeah, i'll go", click a button, and then forget about it 2 months later when the concert actually rolls around and then they'll say "aw damn, i have to work that night" or "i'll be out of town.. sorry!"

also realize that not everyone is on facebook every single day or constantly checks stuff on there. i mean, i log on every day because i use facebook as an email with a couple close friends of mine, but that may not be the same for other people.

go out and make yourself known.
you'd be surprised at how much people open up if you come across as a very personable, social person.

yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa. do it.
go to parties and chat people up! it's fun.
