Rin Kagamine comes from a world filled with highly advanced robotic lifeforms, like many of the "singing robot" world. She and her twin, Len, were part of Vocaloid and wanted to out perform the others. They never seemed to. Miku was the crowd favorite. Their masters knew it. Everyone knew it. However, that didn’t stop them from trying to best their "older siblings."
Their quest for the top was cut short when a virus spread through the world. It was something lab created, artificial; it could infect both human and machine alike, and it moved fast. The disease started with lethargy. Then it moved in deeper, spreading out, and paralyzing. Feverish nightmares soon followed. Rumor said it was a miracle drug gone wrong. Others said it was a deliberate terrorist attack. In the days that followed, there was chaos, and scientists and programmers struggled to find a way to cure, vaccinate, or at least slow down the virus.
Then the unthinkable happened within Vocaloid. The sickness took the voice of their most famous member. Miku collapsed on stage only to wake up later lacking a voice. Her “voice box” had been paralyzed. Devastated at not being able to sing, she begun spending her days and nights staring at the floor with a gloomy expression as the virus worsened. Whispers of disbandment spread.
The other Vocaloids tried to pick up her slack and show her (and their masters) that something could still be done. The Kagamine duo did really well. It was a bitter lead. Rin felt angry that their victory over Miku had been stolen.
Even then, the worst wasn’t over. Luka caught the illness, and like Miku, she lost her voice. One by one they all started to catch it. Another live performance was cancelled. The funds had to be returned while wages were also paid. No new songs were being recorded. The Vocaloid group started to plummet in sales. They were being forgotten.
Then they were abandoned by their masters and left to fend for themselves. Most of their assets had stayed with their masters in a legal loophole. They had a few loyal fans that helped them the first few days, but as time went on, more of them fell victim to the illness. Miku became bedridden as more of her functions shut down.
The last straw was when Len got sick and lost his voice. Rin spent her nights looking out at the night sky and at the blue moon while Len had his feverish dreams. It was only a matter of time until she too got sick, she thought. If he went, so would she. And it was very lonely being the last one in "good" health.
Then it was her turn. She felt it creep into her and start shutting down her systems. It was like a dark was smothering her, constricting everything with an ill grin on its face.
She grasped a guitar in for all it was worth and started singing. Her voice sounded hoarse and distorted, and it was late at night. But she sang and kept singing her heart out. Something shorted within her, and she beat back the virus. Her voice and functions returned to normal, though the virus surged up within her from time to time. Whenever it did, her eyes turned red.
Rin continued to sing. The songs were often about what had happened and how she felt, but she no longer sang for the purpose of beating the others. Green was no longer the enemy. In fact, Rin sang for Len, for Miku, for everyone whose voices were lost to the virus. They supported her as her band. It’s taking them a while to recover their spot in the rankings, but they’ll keep going.
Everything was changing, and their future was still bright.

This Rin has an older appearance than the common Rin. After beating back the virus in her body, she decided to upgrade herself to a more mature frame. However, the virus remained within her, giving her eyes a red glow from time to time. Her dress ranges from formal wear based on her Kagamine costume including the bow to more causal baggy shirts and newsboy cap. Ever since the virus, Rin also carries around a guitar with her. Always.

Rin can sing and play the guitar. Her durability has suffered a little from the virus, but otherwise, she’s tougher than a human. Though she is robotic, her form is "squishier" than others, and she can’t do things like download programs or surf the web unaided without difficulty. Rin is closer to human in those regards.

Rin is just as brash and confident as any other Rin. She knows she’s a good singer and guitarist, and she’s not afraid to back it up. When she’s angry or annoyed, one will know. (The red eyes certainly make her seem angrier when they appear.) Sarcasm is just another tool in her belt. Rin may hold a grudge or argument only because of her competitive nature. She’s also very independent and may seem like she’s not as close to Len as others. They are close, but it’s more subdued and in the background. Rin had to move on from a duo act to a solo act.
On the other hand, she’s grown up in the sense that she understands her words and actions can hurt people, even if they aren’t intended. Seeing Miku with the virus brought a lot into perspective for her. She sees her life as split into two: pre-virus, post-virus. Some of the things Rin thought were important then, weren’t now. There were some things she took for granted back then and now looking on them with new, grateful eyes. While other Rins may actually be hurtful, this Rin won’t push things that far. She steps backs and leaves if things aren’t going anywhere and lose interest in it. (It also helps keep the virus from flaring up.)
Sometimes, she just acts aloof. Rin has gone through a lot due to the virus and in some extent the abandonment of their masters. She holds a soft spot for her other Vocaloid members, her family, but she doesn’t open up to others easily. Nosy people get pushed away. Rin doesn’t have the patience for some people. And, she doesn’t exactly know how to deal with her fans; they can be some upfront people.
While she still flies the Kagamination flag, she’s not as forceful or gun-ho as one might expect her to be. She’s taken up Miku’s job of leading the Vocaloid, and she’s determined to support that instead.
Rin has also developed a fascination with night, especially the times when day turns to night, night turns to day. She can be found singing from the rooftops in shounen style, like she’s trying to sing to the arriving tomorrow or a place just beyond the horizon.

Q: Why are you being so tough on Miku?
A: Have you ever noticed that NEGI’s Miku in Rin’s videos does not look happy?
Q: What about Len?
A: Len only appears in a few videos.
Q: Where’d the virus come from?
A: I needed a reason why someone would carry sadness, despair, and so on with a voice, and I pulled the virus idea and how it affected everyone from
"The End of Solitude." Q: Do I have to worry about the virus?
A: Nope! Because of dimensional differences or whatever pseudo-science term you want to use, everyone has an immunity. Rin may only infects some household appliances when funny is needed.
More to be added later.
