Season 8 Idol Rewatch, Top 8 through Top 7x2

Sep 22, 2010 21:32

I am so far behind Asia (which has finished its reruns of Season 8) but I am going to plug on. I did a little marathon and caught these episodes; here's a quick take on the best parts of them.

Top 8/ Year You Were Born Week. Well this was not Kris' finest week, let's face the facts. It was his worst. Quite a few of the kids actually tanked this week. In the end, this week definitely belonged to Adam and Mad World, which I would also put up there as one of the seminal American Idol performances. But Mad World apparently now belongs to General Hospital, which loves to play it A LOT especially when James Franco comes to town.

Top 8 Results. I love results nights. They remind me of variety shows that I grew up with. This particular one is fun. And not the least little bit because you get this little group number; LOL at how they are down to two girls and have to choreograph around that. Interesting how they had zeroed in already that Kris and Adam were the studs of the bunch.

and one of the best Ford commercials ever...

In the end, Scott goes home and deservedly so.

Top 7 / Movie Night. Ah, this night belongs to Kris and Falling Slowly. Randy was a moron for calling it pitchy, Kara was a moron for saying it was obscure (although she does praise the performance). As for the others, it's almost all pretty bad and Kris takes the night, as Simon points out by calling him brilliant on results night. I did not care for Adam's take on Born to be Wild. Allison was good on her Aerosmith song. Finally at least Simon is mildly attempting to critique Danny.

Top 7/ Results. First, another brilliant group number, and Kris leads them all off singing Maniac from Flashdance. Awesome.

Of course, the bottom 3 and the next 3 to go were pretty much set by this time. It didn't matter how much Danny sucked every week, because he was one of the chosen ones, and Lil, Anoop and Matt were doomed, order to be determined. It was also clear they needed to ditch the judge's save or else it might be used to save say, Kris when TPTB wanted Adam and Danny. Matt is the lucky person saved, and what was great about this was how happy his fellow contestants were for him. You would not have seen that genuine emotion in Season 9. This video is hilarious yet shows how much Idolland loved Matt.

Top 7 Again / Disco Night. In contrast to previous weeks, most of the contestants are good on disco night. I liked everyone's performances except for Allison's Hot Stuff. Kris gives us a Santana'ish Donna Summer song & it will shock you (not) to know it was my favorite of the night.

Top 7 Again/Results: Again, not a shock other than two people go home. I thought Matt deserved to go home compared to Anoop (Lil was a given even though she improved a lot on this night), but really they were the next three gone and the order didn't matter much. What does matter though, is the BEST GROUP NUMBER EVER.

Plus my husband will always watch this episode with me which is great because his comments on Idol always crack me up. He's out of it on current pop culture and very old school, loves the 70s, and all those old disco people who show up (KC, Freda Payne and Thelma Houston). So he enjoys watching them and laughing at how old they are. Irony alert. And ICU flailing over Thelma, Kris.

So I'm up to Top 5 and since my husband made fun of KC, Freda and Thelma, as well as Stevie Wonder in a previous episode, he will really enjoy Rat Pack Week. So look for a special guest commentator next time!
