The Doctor was drifting from a pleasant dream back to the conscious world. There was a soft smile on his face as he relived past days with old friends. When his eyes opened he found himself in a bed inside of a bungalow. Outside the window there was pure beach and azure ocean. He breathed in the salt air. The last time he had been able to relax at a beach he had been traveling with-
“Nice to see you are finally awake, Doctor,” a very familiar Time Lady said from the door way.
“Romana?”
“Of course I’m Romana. I hope that blow didn’t damage your prefrontal cortex.”
The Doctor was off the bed like a shot and embracing her. It had been so long since he had left her in E-Space. Of course, that she had been left in E-Space had been a small solace when he had been forced to end the Time War.
“I’ve missed you. I traveled with others, but none of them could keep up with me like you did.”
“You’ll have to tell me about them while you finish healing.”
“I think I will.”
“We can talk while I show you around the island,” she smiled as she held out her hand.
Without hesitating he took it. Holding hands, the walked along the beach, sand getting in their shoes. The wind would sometimes blow in from the seas, ruffling his hair. He removed his suit jacket, it was too warm for that.
As they walked he told her about everything. He told her about his inability to get to Heathrow Airport, he still had trouble with it to be completely honest. He talked about running into his second version. Then he told stories about a girl that was unusually fond of explosives. That led into a miniature rant about how great this pair of shoes was. He talked about being compared to a U-Boat captain. He even brought up being reunited with K-9 Mark III. What he completely glossed over was the Time War. He expected her to pick up on that, but to his relief she did not. To his even greater relief, she did not ask about what happened to Adric after he had just stopped mentioning the boy in his stories of his life since she had left.
“It is beginning to get cloudy,” Romana said.
He looked up with his brown eyes, “so it is. It looks like rain.”
Even as he spoke, large drops of water began pouring from the sky. He grinned like a boy and started to run along the darkening beach, pulling Romana behind him. From behind, the sound of her laughter rang out. He eventually turned away from the beach and began to lead her into the tropical jungle surrounding it. Everything was green and leafy. There was not a single creature anywhere. It was like a perfect paradise. By some amazing stroke of luck they found a cave. He led her inside.
“Running from the rain is something new,” she laughed.
“I should do it more often. Much more relaxing than running from Daleks.”
“It looks like there is some dry wood in here. We can build a fire to dry off faster.”
The two gathered wood and he used his sonic screwdriver to start a fire close to the mouth of the cave but not so close that the rain would put it out as it struggled to full life. They sat close together with their backs against the wall. He just enjoyed the silence and the companionship as it rained outside. This day was perfect, absolutely perfect. It was a little too perfect.
“Haven’t you noticed yet, Doctor?”
“Hmm, noticed what?”
“What were you doing before you woke up?”
“I was…” he thought back, “I was with Rose. We had landed on a planet in the Omicron Delta system. Wait… the Omicron Delta system is where-“
Romana nodded, “ exactly.”
“So you aren’t really Romana.”
“No, you dreamt of Romana so here I am.”
“The reason you noticed something is wrong because-“
“You would expect me to notice that I am not me.”
“Brilliant, absolutely brilliant.” He grinned, but then it faded away. “Rose! She doesn’t know what type of place this is!” He stood up, ignoring the dirt on his striped pants.
The Romana of his memories stood up. “Oh Doctor, you always knew how to pick the ones that would get into trouble.”
“Then we better go save her from her imagination,” he smiled and held out his hand again. It did not hurt to indulge in a little bit of a fantasy after all.
Rose crouched behind the bushes. She was cold. She was wet. Her clothing was torn. The Doctor was dead. To top everything off she had been running for her life the entire day. Who would have thought this planet would have every race that she had encountered with the Doctor on it? There had been some she had never met before, but were right out of her nightmares.
“Rose Tyler, at last I have found you,” a voice said behind her. It was definitely not the voice of the Doctor.
Slowly, she stood up to her full height and turned around. A voice in her mind silently prayed it was not who she thought it sounded like. When she had gone completely 180 degrees she found herself face to face in an imposing figure clad entirely in black. Not an inch of skin could be seen. Yes, she was now face to face with Darth Vader. How could this be happening?
“Now, Rose Tyler, we meet for the first and last time,” the fallen Jedi said as he activated his lightsaber and swung it in her direction.
Rose dove for the ground. She rolled under the high swing. Her hand touched something metallic. Automatically she brought it up to protect her. Her own lightsaber activated and just barely parried his swing. She starred at her weapon as he pulled back his to swing again. Yes, she had a weapon, but she was not exactly Luke Skywalker. So, she did the only thing she could think of. She swung the lightsaber at the tree next to her. As it came crashing down on top of Darth Vader, she got up and ran. She must have hit a button because it deactivated in her hand. It was the first real weapon she had found and she held it close to her as she ran.
She turned a corner and found herself in a clearing. In it were two men and two women. One of the men was the Doctor. She tried to stop but she slid on the wet grass and landed on her arse.
“Doctor, you are alive! And… who are these women?”
“Rose, I want you to meet Romana and Grace, two very good friends of mine.”
The other man stepped close to Rose and held out a hand to help her up. “Let me explain. My name is the Caretaker. This planet is like what you would call an amusement park-“
“Wait, you mean like the episode of Star Trek? With Captain Kirk and the samurai and Doctor McCoy being dead but not really? Everything you imagine becomes real?”
“I do not know what this ‘Star Trek’ is but yes, a Captain Kirk and his crew did come here for some shore leave. I thought with the level of technology of the ship you came in that your kind would already have been aware of the true nature of this planet.”
“Don’t worry Rose, it is completely harmless,” the Doctor said.
“Oh I know exactly what kind of place this world is,” Rose said as she looked at the two very attractive women with the Doctor. There was a spark of jealousy in her eyes for a second before it was erased by a smile, a not very nice smile. “In fact, I already have an idea.”
The sound of rustling could be heard as a man in a uniform with black pants and a gold tunic stepped out of the forest. He was good looking and walked with a certain swagger. Rose gave a grin at the Doctor before she walked over to the man.
“Hello, I’m Captain James-“
“-T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise. I know all about you.” Rose grabbed onto his arm. “But I would like to hear it from you,” she said as she sauntered off with the man.
The Doctor was completely dumbstruck as the blonde girl left with the fantasy. It did not help that both Romana and Grace were sharing private smiles of amusement between the two of them behind his back. Maybe they were a bit too well done as recreations.
The Caretaker just shook his head as he left to resume his maintenance. Sometimes, he just did not understand the people that came to use the planet’s facilities.
Author’s Notes: This is a crossover with Star Trek: TOS, particularly the episode Shore Leave. In particular it is the same planet.
