He didn’t know when he first fell in love with her. She was initially his friend and they each made sure of that before they even began to travel together. All he needed was having another companion falling for him. He did not want to have the burden of breaking another heart.
Yet, the more time they spent together, the more Donna Noble became dearer to him. More than even Rose had been when she was with him. He began to want to spend more time with her, wanted to take her places that would make her happy. But some things were not meant to be.

When he first met River Song, he had no idea what to make of her. He first met the mysterious woman when he was still travelling with Donna, but yet the archaeologist seemed to know more about him than anyone could have. To him, she seemed too confident in herself, willing to face danger even if the cost was her life. But when members of her team began to be eaten by the Vashta Nerada, River began to show fear.
Yet, she seemed to have the upmost confidence that he would be able to get them out of this. This was unusual. Most of his companions had faith in him, but never such unwavering confidence. But what in the world was she to him?

He decided to take Donna to the Library, a planet made into one big city. He thought that she would have fun seeing what had become of the books that she knew. But what he did not expect was the place being deserted. The only thing that they found was an ominous message telling them to stay out of the shadows, to stay away from them. When he saw the shadows move, he knew that they were in trouble. He did not want to see her hurt.
They ran until they reached a room that had enough light streaming in to provide some protection. What he didn’t anticipate was that team coming in. Including River Song. But as the danger began to become too great, he used a teleporter to send Donna back to the TARDIS. Except, she never made it there. When he found out that she never made it, his hearts broke. He finally realized what she had meant to him; and now, he would never be able to admit it.

The more he spent time with her, the more he began to see that River really did know him - a future him, at least. She seemed disappointed that he did not know her; but he saw resolve in her eyes as she came to terms with it. But he did admire her fiery personality - it was something that he would like to have around. But why did she seem a lot like Donna?
He never did finish that thought. When he tried to sacrifice himself to give CAL more memory, River knocked him out and took his place. He begged her not to do it, but she made him promise not to change anything in his future with her (which was her past). It was the least he could do for her.

When he finally got Donna back, he didn’t say a word. All he could think about was how sad she was when she could not find the person she had been with while she was inside the computer. She was heartbroken, yet tried to show that she was not. So, he kept his feelings to himself.
He decided to take her to Midnight in order for her to relax from the ordeal. In the end, however, it turned out that it was going to be her who was going to be giving comfort. He was broken what had happen on the shuttle. And all she did was hug him.

He re-met River early in his eleventh incarnation when he answered a distress call from her. He still could not figure out why she would basically throw herself off a ship, but he was not happy to find out that she could fly his ship better than he could.
He was even more furious when he found out she was helping an organization hunt down a Weeping Angel. But what scared him the most was that he could lose everyone to a whole army of Angels. She even offered to sacrifice herself in order to close a crack, but he objected the idea because he knew that it was not her time to die. They managed to save the day, but she would not tell him who she murdered, only saying that the victim was a good man.

It was late in his tenth incarnation when the Daleks began attempting to destroy the universe. They created a device that, using the power generated from stolen planets, would cause entire universes to collapse upon themselves. He felt so helpless, but it was his beloved companion that would save the day. He only wished that Donna did not have to take a part of his mind in order to do it. But he had to admit - she was absolutely brilliant.
After dropping Rose and his doppelganger off in Pete’s World, he knew what he had to do in order to save the one he loved. She objected, saying that she wanted to stay with him forever; however, she knew that she would die if he did not do something. So, in a moment of fast work, he took away her memories of him and their time together. He took her home and ordered her family to make sure that she never remembered, saying that she would burn if she did. He then left her forever.

He fell in love with River the more he saw her, with her constantly reminding him of the one he lost. Yet, she was her own woman, though he had to admit that he was a bit uneasy with “dating” the daughter of his companions. Yet, in the end, he married her and spent a major part of his life travelling off and on with her. She had to remain in the Stormcage in order to keep up the illusion that he was dead. But that did not stop them from having fun.
She was finally released from prison, which allowed them to spend more time together, yet he knew that the time was coming when she was going to have to go to the Library to meet her fate. He tried to postpone it for as long as he could. In the end, however, he had to let her go. So, he got a haircut and a new suit and took her to the Singing Towers. He gave her an updated sonic screwdriver and cried, knowing that this would be the last time they would meet.
***
He saw Donna at the end of his tenth life. He was happy to see her so happy with her new life. He just hoped that she would use his gift wisely.
***
He felt her die. He did not know how. Maybe it was the connection between them that allowed him to know. He cried again, knowing that he would have to tell Amy and Rory that their daughter was dead.

As he sat back and remembered the two women that impacted his life so profoundly, he realized that he was able to move on. Yet he couldn’t shake the guilt and remorse that he felt towards them. He just wished that he had more time with them. But he knew that he could not and everything became so…dim. He just sat alone in his room, tears streaming down his face.
