Love and Adventure in Cardiff
Jack Harkness and Ianto Jones race down the streets of Cardiff.
As they pause, out of breath, they glance at their companion who seemed barely winded from their flight by foot to this intersection. They silently envied his ability to run as fast as them and not break a sweat. Then again their friend was half - human.
“Should be coming up that alien soon,” the meta crisis version of the Doctor said, pointing a tracking device that Jack thought was horribly cobbled together into one of the alley ways. “Looks like a Katakarian all right.”
“Which would be?” Ianto asked.
“About the size of one of Earth’s Polar Bears, with a bad temperament and teeth like a shark.” The half - human/Time Lord hybrid answered.
“That’s comforting to know,” the Welshman deadpanned.
Jack ignored them. Jack had called both Doctors and Donna while they were travelling in the TARDIS earlier, needing some help to track down what Jack had figured was an alien creature before it could hurt the populace of Cardiff. Normally he would not have done so except Gwen was down with the flu and Martha was on assignment, helping Mickey train with UNIT. Which left Jack and Ianto to keep guard over Cardiff together. Hence the call for expert help.
“Doc, how are you and Donna doing?” he spoke into the commlink in his ear, hoping that the Time Lord Doctor and Donna Noble were still okay. The meta crisis Doctor had no such uncertainty. He would have known if something had happened to the Time Lord or Donna. Afterall, he and Donna were uniquely bonded.
”The bloody git’s got us trapped in the elevator!” Donna’s annoyed voice rang through the commlinks of not just Jack, but Ianto and the meta crisis Doctor as well. The man in the blue suit winced as surely as he knew his Time Lord counterpart was.
”Donna” the Time Lord began but Jack cut him off.
“Anything we can do Doc?”
“What? Oh, no we should be just fine here. A little fiddling with the Sonic Screwdriver and we should be out of here in a couple of hours. You just find that Katakarian.” In the background, Donna could be heard muttering in indignation.
“Okay, let us know if that changes.” Jack said, switching the commlink channel off, as did Ianto. The half - human Doctor however still was still listening in, as the Doctor and Donna had not switched the channel off on their end.
Nine hundred years old, and you still can’t tell that the red button on an elevator means emergency stop?!” Donna bit out. “or was just another your little diversion tactics to ‘protect little ol’ me?” Last time it was ‘accidentally’ locking me up in a cupboard. What will it be next time Spaceman?” Encasing me in bubblewrap?
The Doctor listening in on the brewing argument fought not to groan. It had been six months since the Earth had been stolen and returned and the TARDIS had left Bad Wolf Bay for the last time. When his brain began to break down due to having a Time Lord brain in a mostly human body, it had been Rose that had finally figured out what none of the three with Time Lord minds hadn’t.
That both sides of the meta crisis needed to be together to remain stable.
Which meant sending him back to the original universe and to the original Doctor and Donna.
Rose quickly commissioned the Dimension Cannon to be put back together in hopes of finding one last small crack in the universe. They found it, but it was only big enough for one attempt and to only send one person through.
So Rose quickly hugged him goodbye and activated the Cannon to send him through before his mind could break down completely.
He ended up on the TARDIS at the exact moment it had crossed back into the original universe, as the original Doctor had been about to decide that the only way to save Donna would be to wipe her memories of her time with him and hope the meta crisis part of her wouldn’t break through and kill her. As the half human Doctor pointed out later, it would not have done very much good. Eventually the blocks would break down and the memories and Time Lord consciousness would have indeed killed her if the he hadn’t been able to be in the original universe. All three were very grateful that nobody’s memory had to be wiped and they were all together. The two meta crisis Time Lords were also relieved that although they had to stay in the original universe to remain stable, they could be okay at moderate distances. It could have lead to some awkward situations otherwise.
The three of them had formed a fairly good team in the last six months. The only problem was that the Time Lord was growing ever more increasingly protective of Donna and doing everything he could to keep Donna out of harm’s way. He had a sneaking feeling why the other man was doing this. After all he had those same shared memories of doing the same to Rose. Problem was Donna was proving that she was going to tolerate it even less than Rose did.
The half - human Doctor was grateful that he did not share those feelings for Donna that his progenitor did. He cared for her, respected her, and valued their friendship; but he did not love her. Not the way she deserved to be. Not the way he knew the Time Lord Doctor loved her.
Unfortunately the Time Lord was never very good with expressing his feelings for people. Which lead to things like Bad Wolf Bay, locking people in cupboards, and trapping himself and Donna in elevators. Which in turn, resulted in arguments like the one he was hearing now. When Jack had called the trio to investigate strange ‘polar bear’ sightings, he thought about suggesting to the original Doctor that Donna go with Jack and Ianto, but given what he’d seen of the Time Lord jealousy towards Jack, that might not have been the best idea in the world, despite the fact that immortal man’s main fancy seemed to be the Welshman.
“I am not a child that needs to be bundled up in wool!” Donna roared.
”I never said you were Donna,”the Time Lord explained, it’s just - “
”Just what?”Donna asked”You’ve been treating me like I’m fragile for weeks now. Like I’m some piece of China to be put on a wall to look at but not touched.”
”Donna you’re more than that! Much, much more! You’re -”
”I’m what?! Well, spit it out Spaceman! I’m what to you?”Donna asked.
“Found it!” Jack shouted from somewhere a bit further in the alley way they were a few moments ago, his voice slightly panicked. “Doctor!”
“Coming!” the half - human Doctor said, switching off his own commlink channel. Besides he figured or hoped what would be coming next in that conversation and all he could think was: Finally.
Confronting the Katakarin was not quite so easy as either the mostly human trio thought. For one thing, the meta crisis Doctor forgot that it could turn itself invisible for brief periods of time in order to escape. It took luring it into a bakery shop, a timely gunshot from Jack to distract it, and several tons of baking powder in order to near it enough to sedate it and calm it down. The Doctor had also forgot how heavy one of them could be as they dragged it back to Torchwood’s HUB and placed it in containment cell. The Time Lord would probably want to take it back to the TARDIS and take it back to where it’s homeworld was. The meta crisis Doctor figured that would only precipitate another argument between the Time Lord and Donna.
Quite frankly, he wouldn’t have blamed her. He was going to be feeling the bruises from tangling with the creature in several hours. He also may have hurt his knuckles from a wild punch he threw which inadvertently hit Jack when the creature ducked. Besides he suspected they would be due for much more relaxing adventures soon enough.
When he went back to the TARDIS after checking to make sure his friends did indeed, make their way out of the elevator three hours after tangling with the Katakarin, there was a deep and satisfying hum in the TARDIS. As he passed by the door to the Time Lord Doctor’s bedroom and saw the Gallifreyan equivalent of a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign and quite unmistakeable sounds coming from within, he walked by and whistled a jaunty little tune that Donna knew.
He silently thanked the TARDIS for making the suggestion of the elevator to the Time Lord.
