I love this episode. I found Elton to be a really relatable character and I love all the little things we get to know about him right from the start. Just the other day, my co-worker was playing his music through open speakers and I wasn't even annoyed because it was ELO and I thought, "Aww, I like Elton."
LINDA was endearing leaning towards weird, much like real-life fandom. You meet over this common interest and, if you're lucky, your friendships branch out into other things.
It's really Jackie's part in this that makes me love it so much, because we really see how her character has developed here. I love how in her scene with Elton near the end how she expresses her hurt that Elton wasn't interested in her ("'Cos it’s never me, is it?") and how she goes into what it's like to be in her shoes, one of those people who's left behind ("Let me tell you something. About those who get left behind. Because it’s hard. And that’s what you become, hard.") and then shows her fierce protectiveness not just of her daughter, but of the Doctor, who has become part of her family ("But if there’s one thing I’ve learnt, it’s that I will never let her down. And I’ll protect them both until the end of my life. So whatever you want, I’m warning you: back off.").
I love all of that, but you know what my favorite part is? It's this line: "Sweet... maybe. Passionate... I suppose. But don't ever mistake that for nice."
