Haha! What an appropriate username for this episode!
I wouldn’t say I have a major problem with Series 2, since some of them are my favourite episodes, I really like this one, School Reunion, the Satan Pit two-parter. The Girl In The Fireplace is everything Doctor Who can and should be! <3 I even have love for Fear Her which I know is a bit hated by fandom :o)
It is just the relationship between David Tennant and Billie Piper that I find off-putting. Rose’s enthusiasm that I found infectious in Series 1, which was an enthusiasm for both the travelling and this strange wonderful man, was kind of replaced by an irritating and cloying sense of love only for the Doctor. And the Doctor likewise. They weren’t people enjoying the ride, they were people using the ride to be wrapped up in each-other.The stand-out scene is that awful one in the first Cyberman episode where Rose and the Doctor are so wrapped up in being smug together that they’re actually incredibly insensitive to Mickey. They’re just not the sort of people I would want to spend any time with. I feel like Rose really tempered the ninth Doctor and made him a lot more compassionate, which was a great character arc, but in this series it felt more like the Doctor had made Rose a lot less compassionate, and undid what I felt was the point of their relationship, that they improved one another.
I can’t *really* hate Series 2 for it, because I know there was a dramatic point to it leading to the finale. But as I say, it does make it an uncomfortable watch for me at times, as I prefer the more mature take on the relationship from the previous year.
It is interesting isn’t it? That’s what I like about this sort of discussion thread, how you can have entirely different perspectives pointed out about the same material :o)
Aww, we must be the polar opposite of new Who! :op it's so tempting to ask why you don't like GITF, but as you say that's a pleasure deferred for next week! What a cliffhanger, I can even hear the theme music scream in as I type :oD
