1. There are varying philosophies and opinions as to which episodes are the best to introduce a new viewer to Doctor Who. As the first episode of the new series, "Rose" is a popular choice. Do you think it's a good first episode for a new viewer? What was YOUR first episode of Doctor Who?
It was the right choice for me. I remember catching part of an episode, the first Cybermen episode I think, and being really confused an uninterested. But when I started watching from Rose, I quickly got hooked on the show.
2. How well does this episode function as an introduction to the concept of the show as well as to the characters of Rose and the Doctor?
I think it is an excellent introduction for both characters as well as their interactions. I fell in love with both characters. In fact, I'd say Nine and Rose clicked so much more for me than Ten and Rose which never quite gelled in my mind.
3. What did you think of this episode when you first saw it? Has your opinion changed at all now?
When I first saw it, I loved it and was instantly hooked. I admit that in some ways, my views have changed. Not a lot, but a bit. I think because Rose kind of overstayed her welcome for me and that all the shippy stuff later frustrated me, I have to force myself to not read all that stuff into the early episodes sometimes when I watch. Because I do love Rose as a character and she is pretty awesome in this episode. I just don't ship her with the Doctor unless it is 9 and Jack is involved as well.
Edit: And I'm realizing this is coming across as if I don't like her. I love Rose. Rose is awesome. It is just that I have to put aside my irritation at her showing up in season 4 when I don't think she was needed or helpful to the story and remember that she's awesome in seasons 1 and 2. Because it is hard, sometimes, to get completely back into the mindset of earlier episodes and forget all that comes after.
4. Why does Rose refuse the Doctor the first time he asks her to travel with him?
I think she wants to go, but she's trying to be good. She's trying to do what she is suposed to. She's trying to be responsible. It takes that extra push to get her to do what she knows she wants to do.
