Ok, that subject was a satire of job interviews. Why? Because i'm about to have my first. That's right, next Wednesday at 1 PM i will be interviewing with the Chicago Tribune. I know, i know. I'm a broadcast journalism major. (And now i tell myself: "That's exactly our point Dan, you're a BROADCAST major! WHAT PART OF BROADCAST DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND!?!?!?!?") Well, yes. I am a broadcast major. I am fully aware of this. In fact, i am a double major, as i FINALLY turned in my history major petition to graduate, but that's besides the point. Back to the task at hand...this quarter i have learned to love writing for newspapers as well.
If you guys don't know, i'm in a Sports Reporting class right now taught by the Sports Editor of the Trib. He's super nice and really likes my writing. And i LOVE doing the writing. Coming home from Chicago Wolves games, all i want to do is go to my computer and start typing away. I feel comfortable using my own voice and telling the story of a game the way i saw it. I don't have to tell everything play by play by play...i just mention what a non-observer needs to know. And that's a huge difference between newspaper and radio/tv. If i'm announcing a game, i enjoy the broadcast aspect, but not necessarily the game. I'm working during the game, instead of enjoying it. With newspaper, you enjoy it immensely and then work afterwards.
Anyway, i'm babbling. You all want to know about the job interview. It's not for a writing job. And it's not full-time. Basically, i'd be their bitch. But hey, someone's gotta be their bitch. The official title of the job i'm applying for is Statistics Editor. I'd help to lay out the scoreboard page every night, decide what goes on there, what Chicago sports fans need to know, etc. I like statistics, and i love sports. Good combination. It may be boring, but you gotta get your wheel in the door somehow. And my prof (the sports editor) told me to apply for it. So i figure that can't hurt my chances. So here goes nothing...
In terms of other job updates...i'm going in to WBEZ tomorrow to meet the new managing editor. This will be important. Everyone there has been clamoring for them to hire me, but the old news director told me that funds are tight. Grr...but if the new woman likes me i may still have a shot. So those are the two most likely destinations for this 22-year-old behemoth of an individual. Oh, and just to freak out all the seniors reading this...43 days til commencement.
Bon Voyage!!!
