He looked over at the comm panel screen to see a bemused and shirtless Pete leaning over Jackie who'd ducked under the covers.

I felt no pity for the Doctor there. They named the dog Rose - and he laughed!

Thanks for the review. Gotta have those hubby/baby breaks, I know. I put mine in a cage and send him over to my sister's house when his whining gets to be a bit much. Bloody fuzz-band! Tracks litter everywhere, insists on sleeping with his paws around my neck -- even when we're not in bed...

As to canon, the comment isn't about the better writer thing. But that in SM's view, there really is no such thing as true canon for a DW, since anything is possible and history can be rewritten, time lines changed, etc. Essentially, he's telling the canon junkies to just relax. So what if a few things get changed for the sake of the drama now and again. It's just a TV show!

As long as you're having fun then I see no reason to worry about canon. And while some of the fans may see the books as canon, the series writers don't necessarily have that view. For me, only the series itself is actual canon and I'm free to lift whatever I like from the books and audios if it suits my story. So, in that sense there is no canon. Except you can't really have the Doctor finally admit he was born in Newark, New Jersey, his second heart is really his unborn, but alive twin brother living inside his chest or that he found the TARDIS at a jumble sale held in a disused scrap yard in 1963, which is why he really doesn't know how to fly the bloody thing!
