Help! Artist &/or technology types!

I just went to use my scanner with my new computer only to discover...they hate each other. Hypatia (my computer) even went so far as to inform me she does not recognize my scanner at all and even if she did they would never be compatible (actually the websites I looked up said they were incompatible models, but I found it funnier coming from 'Tia). Apparently Hypatia only dates younger models because she ignores my printer too. Which has led to me realizing...I need new ones. Which makes sense; I bought the scanner and printer in 2001 to take to college so they're several generations too old.

I need a nice high resolution scanner and printer to make art with. Any suggestions for an affordable set-up? They don't have to be combined; I can have a separate printer and scanner.

Help?
